B5.9 Then and now..
Howdy Fellas,
On my way to work I began wondering. From my understanding, the ISB 5.9 engine has its roots in Agriculture or something not related to automobiles. How much have the internals i.e. crank, rod, block, bearings... actually changed from then and now? ??? I'm sure that when the engine was originally developed, Case/Cummins never dreamed that the engine would be making 305 hp and 555 ft/lbs of torque. If the engine is over designed now, was it REALLY over designed back when it was developed?
Just curious. I sometimes wonder about strange things. :P

Re:B5.9 Then and now..
welcome to the site...Actually, our motors are used in different applications (larger trucks) that have been developing more power for years now...Dodge just likes to de-tune them down so their drivetrain's don't get torn up...Aint it cool...a medium duty engine in a pick-up ;D........oh, I got to ask, whats a "chow bung bung"
Re:B5.9 Then and now..
Here is a little history from Dave Fritz's site.
http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Facts/diesel_sales.htm
Brief history of the Dodge Ram / Cummins Diesel combination (From TDR #1)
The Cummins B series (3.9L 4 cylinder and 5.9L six cylinder) diesel was developed in the early 1980's as a joint venture between Cummins and Case tractor. Cummins was to provide the engine expertise, Case the production volume. In 1984, an active step van/ bread truck repower program for the Ford E350 and GM P30 chassis was successfully promoted by Cummins.
As B production capacity expanded, Cummins began actively seeking a major OEM entry for the 6B 5.9L engine in a pickup truck chassis. The 6B was seen by Dodge as a possibility for the aging Ram 250 and 350 which had no diesel option. In late 1986, Dodge and Cummins reached an agreement to target the 1998 model year for the ram diesel. Cumins accepted the engineering challenge of mating the engine to the existing Dodge Ram chassis. As unseen technical problems surfaced, the introduction was rescheduled for the 1989 model.
The first year forecast was for less than 8,000 Dodge diesel pickups, with sales expected to grow by 3,000 trucks each following year. Ram diesel sales for 1989 surpassed 16,000 trucks and the numbers have continued to grow.
Cummins data indicates that the life of the B engine in a medium duty truck is slightly over 300,000 miles. Estimated engine life in the pickup is unknown because few engines have failed or worn out, and there are numerous reports of over 800,000 miles.
A list of engine changes by model year.

Re:B5.9 Then and now..
Thanks for the welcome barracuda. To answer your question, Chowbungbung is Cantonese for "stinky" or "smelly". Hey, I needed a unique user name. :P I agree. it rules knowing that your engine in your truck had to be "detuned" for fear of damage to other driveline components. How many other vehicles can say that!
Barney.. thanks for the links. That information is very interesting.
Does anybody know of a site which would list all changes to the engine since its birth? Still curious.

Re:B5.9 Then and now..
well if you remember right a few months ago or was it longer :
I talked to a guy that just came back from the proveing grounde where they had a 410Ci cummins in an 03 dodge 8) well Case IH jut unvailed their new Engine in their tractors just so happens its a 410CI Cummins with only 100HP but it has the common rail that the 5.9 Cummins has ;D very quiet and it has a HX-55 turbo :
Should be nice to see if that engine does ever make it into the Dodge trucks.

Re:B5.9 Then and now..
unless there are 2 proving grounds in Michigan and there maybe, those are our proving grounds.
I inquired about the 410 cummins being there and got "I haven't seen anything"...we do test lockers there on our off road section and there is an oval for the over the road truck testing.
We are testing heavy duty cummins EGR and VGT there now.
I am still gathering information.....
