Then you have the issue of what else he may want to do with it in the future. If he needs PTO's, he wont get them on an automatic (unless he uses an Allison / divorced case setup). The manuals open so many more windows to stuff you can add to your truck - if you're into that off road stuff. It all depend on what he will be doing with it...

I had a 98 with a auto, a 04 with a 6 speed and now a 06 with a auto. I swore after the 98 that I would never own anouther dodge auto and now that I have anouther one after owning a 6 speed in between I am kicking myself in the rear for settling for a auto. These things are power robing piles of poop. I am wishing and hoping some one will come along and buy this thing so I can get anouther 6 speed. Next time I will have a freind come with and bring a cattle prod to keep me away from the autos when I go looking.

Not true, any Auto truck with the NP241DHD have the PTO option on the side of the TC.

I know that. I was referring to the transmission itself not having the PTO option (unless he uses an Allison trans), not the transfer case.

He also didn't specify what year truck he is considering doing this to.

Not to mention that he will have to find the trans and case together (or from different places) that can mate up.

A standard 47RH / 47RE will NOT bolt to a NP241DHD. The transfer case input shaft spline count is different. Considering they didn't use the 241HD until after 1998, the donor truck will have a 47RE, which means if he is trying this in an older truck, he will have to figure out how to electronically control the trans.

PS: we are both making the mistake of calling them a "NP241HD", when they are actually a NV241HD.

So I got this automatic, I do like the quad cab by the way, but the automatic, it is only stock so I can't say anything about a beefed up one, which I would like to drive to see how they are, but I don't know of anyone around, anyway all the power goes into the automatic tranny and all the auto tranny gnomes love the cummins power, so they are living in the tranny just suckin up all this power steeling it before it goes to rear wheels, it's ridiculous, it really is. So I plan on doing an auto to manual swap in the near future, and hopefully get that set you back in the seat feeling again, and the occasion sled pull. Unless by chance I get to drive a beefed up auto that would change my mind, but theres just something about the direct power of the manual tranny and grabbin gears!

I know exactly what you mean about the stock auto tranny. But trust me, get a low-stall billet TC and VB and it will make you love the auto again. It's one of those mods, where you can feel a big difference between before and after. I think it's mandatory to do those mods on these autos. The stock TC is designed for a gasser. But like any mod, don't expect TOO much because you might get disappointed.

Yeah, I kinda have a plan to beef up my auto, but I'm going to do the 5spd swap, and keep the auto around because I have plans to put a cummins in my parents 97 Ford Crew Cab, and I would like to put the beefed up auto behind that when I do. The full 4 door crew cabs are nice, can't afford a Megacab, so that the next best I can do!

LOL, I must have a freak then, Brownie was built 6/97 and has a 47RE/NV241DHD.

Perhaps most are DLD's but the ones with the Towing or Plow prep package will have them.

My previous 94 gasser was built in 8/93 if memory serves me right.

Is yours titled as a 97, or a 98?

Possibly was some option on 97's?

All the research I did before finding my donor truck said 98 and up model years had them, and all the boneyards all had non HD's hanging under them, even the duallies.

I dunno - I just drive it lol

Yep, she definitely is a 97, build date is smack in the middle.

I thought this one had the snow plow prep, perhaps that is my other one. This one has the following options:

ADJP - HD Service group
AHC - Trailer tow group
AHJ - Camper special group.

I am thinking one of those 3 options triggered the DHD because I know not that many came factory with a 47RE and the DHD.
