ARGH, another 44 bites the dust
44 is on the way out and I got a bunch of volunteer projects coming up.

Thanks to Timinva, I got another one on the way. Anyone up for changing out a 44 and destroying a few barley pops?
UMmmmm, better wait till the 44 is on before popping the tops though.

Working 8 to 4 this weekend ,,,,, off Tue & Wed,,,,,,,, start 4 by 12's Thurs for 7 of them in a row which takes care of the following weekend unless we get started early in the morning. As long as I got time to get cleaned up and make it to work by 1600,,,,, I'll give you a hand.
Geez wish I was closer to ya. I'd help ya change out yours and you can help me change out mine! Might take longer than 4 hours tho.....well ...you know....gotta have a break once in a while and make sure the pop doesn't get stale!!

if you take the truck somewere and have it done its not cheap i guess now 3 to 5 grand but if you find the parts used and know how to do it your self you can easily do it for 3000 its not that cheap but not nearly as expensive as everyone thinks to me the worst thing is the time involved the swap is not all that time consuming and can be done in a day but some trucks take a while to tune timing, afc, etc but if you want a truck that nakes lots of power or a stock truck that is dead reliable or anything in between its the only way to go but thats my .02
Well at $3000 bucks I can buy a few VP's and do it myself. Ill probably get rid of it before I do another VP. Im puttin one on now so hopefully it will at least last past the year warranty and then its goin to get sold.
Well, she's back to full potential again thanks to Boatnik. He showed up at 08:00 sharp and by 12:00 sharp, we had swapped it out, road tested it, and were cleaning up tools. She's rollin the black smoke again and idle is rock steady again. And no barley pops either.
Had to solder the Blue Chip wire to the pump wire and the intake heater grate bolts were loose and burnt.
Guess I'll order another one.
Thanks Boatnik.................

Hey Dieseldude, or anyone else for that matter.
I have a question about the VP44.
The other day I was walking past a 24 valve CTD in a parking lot that would not start. They were cranking it and cranking it. It spun just fine and sounded normal on the starter but no fire. Some old coot was out there with the hood up and a bottle of starting fluid in his hand.
Now, this is a 90+ degree day and they just drove in shortly before all this.
So as he was opening up the air filter cover to give it a spray I said "why are you giving it starting fluid?' And he says "these things have lift pumps". "I just put a new one on a couple weeks ago and this is how I get it started". I just shook my head and decided he was clueless. Well, he gave it a shot and of course it fired right up with some nasty rattling as you'd expect, but it didn't quit, and next thing I knew he was driving away and everything seemed normal.
Now I can't understand what happened. Obviously it was not a lift pump problem but was it a VP44 problem? Is that how they fail? Can you get them started and they will keep running? I'm lost. I know the lift pump can be intermittant as it's failing, but his was replaced. It normally needed help starting and then would keep running. I was thinking a suction leak might be the problem but it ran smooth with no obvious air in the fuel problems. Any ideas.
Thanks,
John

Sounds like the 44 is on the way out. The ether will fire it long enough to spin the engine and pump speed up enough to start I would say.
The next time you see someone spraying ether, turn and run (don't walk) the other direction.
