Anyone switch from PSD to Cummins

I was wondering if anyone here has switched from a '99 or newer PowerStroke to an '03 Cummins. Are you happy with your decision? Did your PSD have any modifications and if so, how did it compare to the Cummins? I've got an '01 PSD and am thinking about getting rid of it for an '03 Cummins HO 6-spd; especially since they're offering $4500 in rebates, WOW. I like my crew cab and the engine has been fantastic, replaced the tranny at 31,000, but otherwise no problems at all. I'm looking at the future though, and with my engine having powdered metal conrods, from what I've heard 400 flywheel horsepower is all they can take. How do you like the quad cab? One of the things I like about the Dodge, besides the Cummins, is the frame. It looks a lot stronger. My brother traded a '97 PSD for an '03 Cummins and he is really enjoying it. I'm also wondering about the crew cab rumor for '05. Perhaps I should wait...?

Re:Anyone switch from PSD to Cummins

I don't own a PSD but I have family members and many friends that do.
My Dad has a 2k F350 CC dually with the Diablo Sport chip, and it's still a dog compared to my Cummins HO. Granted, the F350 is pushing more weight and has a auto. What's nice about the Ford is the bigger cab, but that's all.
I already have several friends dump their PSD's for the new Cummins HO with the 48re auto.

Re:Anyone switch from PSD to Cummins

I had an 01 ex-cab 4x4 and an 02 crew cab 4x4. Both were PSD with an auto. They were both stock as is my Dodge. I can say hands down the Dodge for me is the best vehicle decision I have made in several years. This truck will be sticking around for several years. The biggest load I had behind the Fords was around 9,000. The biggest load I have had beind my Dodge is around 10,500. The Dodge pulls much better ;D. I think it drives better also. I do wish the crew was a bit bigger but I have taken several trips with 5 people in the truck. One trip was about eight hours no real complaints, other than the back seat sits up to straight. Hope this answers your questions let me know if I can answer any thing else.

Re:Anyone switch from PSD to Cummins

No...but thinking about it. I have a 02 F250 PSD 6 spd. Reason I got the hand shaker because of Ford's weak trans. Getting kinda tirded of shifting though...also have GOUT!

I pull a 8500 pound fiver about 12 times a year and the rest is daily driving. The PSD pulls fine, so I'm not concerned about the power of either two. I want a four door with long bed and the long bed Ram is only about 18 inches longer than my shortbed supercab. And the turning radius is only 9 inches greater on the Ram. So I wont be too bad off in the turning deptment if I get the Ram.

I still think Ford wins on looks though!! Like everyone says..."if they only put a Cummins in a Ford!"

I still looking for the best deal...not too many 03 left so I might go with a 04.

Re:Anyone switch from PSD to Cummins

I just spent a week driving an auto-trans, 4X4 extended cab (shortbox) PSD truck... I have a 98 Cummins 5-spd with 202,000 miles, but I was in CA watching over my brother who was in the hospital - so I drove his truck all week.

I'm an objective person, but WOW I couldnt' believe the difference. The auto-trans PSD is a serious dog - throttle response is terrible, fuel economy is bad, I'm willing to admit part of this might be because I'm accustomed to the manual tranny.

For what it's worth, the Ford truck had a nice interior, good visibility (except for the mirrors - HUGE blind spot) fom the cab, rode and steered OK. But that engine seemed weak - it has 60,000 miles on it, bone stock, no chip or upgrades.

I've been in a friend's 03 Cummins truck, quad cab dually 4X4. The interior is again a step up from Ford, so I think the 03 Cummins would be a nice truck to have.

There's no need for me to explain to you why a new $45,000 6.0 Powerstroke would be a BAD PURCHASE... sounds like Ford is having HUGE problems and is buying a large number of them back... http://www.autosafety.org/article.ph...34&scid=93

Re:Anyone switch from PSD to Cummins

I had a 99 & 00 PSD, 1 SC 4x4 Dually w/ an auto & 1 SC 4x4 3/4 w/ auto, before I bought my CTD. I had replaced the trans 2x under warranty on the 1 ton and the 3/4 was not down shifting when stopping when I sold it. Both had front brake problems continually. (Rotors) The 3/4 threw the driveshaft (rear) through the fuel tank the day after I bought it. (Slight off-camber ditch, throttle & carrier bearing seperated. New driveshaft,trans,t-case,& rear main oil seal + fuel tank) Don't miss either of them!
