Any Reason NOT to Buy a GMC w/ Duramax??
I might get roasted for saying this but this is what I witnessed today. There was an 18 wheeler with a flatbed that tried to do a U-turn in the middle of the hwy and got jack-knifed in the ditch. A guy in a Duramax single wheel (didn't see if it was a 3/4 or 1 ton) hooked a chain on it and got him out of the road. I was impressed. I'm afraid if I did that with my truck I would be looking for a new transmission right now.
utvaquero - thanks for the DMax fact post.
CARB & EPA websites notwithstanding, the best definition of what is, or isn't anything is normally found in it's behavior or usage. You know, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck... it's probably a duck.
In due time, perhaps the DuraMax will find it's way into medium trucks, like the Cummins already has, instead of pick-up trucks - where the Cummins is also common; but in the meantime, it's not going to be generally regarded as a medium-duty diesel.
The application warrants the classification.

Hmm, GVWRs up to 26,000 lbs.
I thought sure the Cummins was the only light/medium duty cross over diesel.

Admittedly, the 6, 7, and 8-series Kodiaks come equipped with either DMAX's I6 or a CAT I6 but their 4, and 5-series MDVs are available w/6.6L V8 Duramaxes.

I have always considered TBO (time before overhaul) to be the difference between light duty and medium duty diesel engines and with a 200,000 mile TBO on the Isuzu and a 400,000 TBO on the Cummins that is why I consider one light and the other medium duty . Maybe in a few years they may raise the TBO on the Chevy but I do not see it ever holding together as long as a motor built as heavy duty as the Cummins .The 400,000 I have always felt is very conservative on the Cummins and I also feel that 200,000 is a mite low on the Isuzu also . I personally have never seen a wore out Cummins in a pickup that wasn't bombed and received normal care even with very high mileage . There has got to be a few high mileage Duramax's out there by now that are past there rated TBO and maybe the low TBO will go up down the road and they will earn a better rating , who knows .
Your correct I did not. It was my GF who gave it the name Maxi Pad and I though it was a good one so I have used it many times. As for the Chevy people over at the diesel place many there can't bring them selves to say the word Dodge as if it were the worse cuss work in the world. So to me it’s fair and fun to have a name for their diesel engine.
Huh, the C 5500 Kodiak comes available with a 6.6L V8 Duramax.

Diesel pushers, school busses, emergency fire equipment, marine propulsion, emergency generators, Massy Tractors, Case Skidloaders... Non of those were 6.6 or 6.0.... Wonder why???
6.0l

International sells a tuned down version of the 6.0l powerstroke to bluebird and they use it in their busses.
