85 Ford Diesel

My Mom-in-Law has an 85 Ford diesel with a possible bad tranny she wants to get rid of.
Does anyone know what this thing might be worth.
I believe the engine is an international. No turbo......I don't think??

Depends on conditions

engine is an old (should be if its original) 6.9 liter international diesel, no turbo came with these trucks stock, and they were i think about 150 rwhp and 330 rwtq or so. Some had the dual range trannies, others didnt. These trucks are worth bout 2500-5000 dollars, I still see them sellin in upwards of 4K but for 5K that truck best be flawless, now if its an auto it mighta had a c6 behind it, So id say its worth on the lower end of the scale...

PS i sold a 1993 F 250 4wd, 5 speed, IDI engine (same as the 85) 220K on it with no mods but a K&N airfilter and straight pipe for 5K. OF coarse tho, i took off my sound system, amps, hitches, gooseneck ball, recievers, clevises and had I some extra rims and tires, those Alcoas would have come off too.. but i goofed...

They're kind of a tough sell up here, pretty widely known that if you have the throttle pinned they will almost get out of their own way. I think 1/2 tons with the 4.2 6 cyl actually sell for more.

That would be a 6.9L-b engine.21-1 compression,185 horses at the crank,C6 automatic or 4 speed manual.Great engines. Not a power house by no means stock but Neither were the Stock Gen 1 Cummins with the same style pump.I would guestimate if the body was straight and rust free and interior is in above average condition with a blown tranny the truck is in the $1500-2000 range. If it has an aftermarket turbo I would add about $500 to that price.History lesson-they didn't offer the old IDI in turbo until 1993.....and stopped production in 1994.Also in 1988 they stopped production of the 6.9L and changed to the 7.3L which is basically a semi improved 6.9L with larger Cylinders,Head bolts, head gaskets, and a tweek more power but by doing this they gave the 7.3L a fatal flaw in that it can cavitate without coolant additives due to thin Cylinder walls.

So should I take it off of her hands and try to fix it up myself??
Maybe slap a turbo on it?
Will my stock turbo from my cummins work?
I could upgrade smy Dodge with somethin better.

It won't just bolt on.You will have to rig up a mount, and exhaust plus a way to get the air from the turbo to the engine.

Cool slower

sounds like a good truck, you may think that it's slow. but the '83-84' ford ranger with the 2.2 n/a diesel is probably slower.

What about slapping a standard trans in instead of the auto. Which would be cheaper and what's the likelyhood of finding a good used one at a junkyard?

Many shops around here will do a bench job on a C6 for around $500-600 including rebuilt TC. To convert from auto to stick you have to change flywheel, bellhousing, driveshaft, T-case???, clutch linkage etc.....prolly not worth it.

Great thing about these trucks is the Manual and auto truck are the same. The hole for the shifter is in the floor just gotta replace a small plate that bolts in,The hole for the Clutch Master cylinder is already in the firewall, holes for the crossmember are already in the frame, etc.just gotta get a 4 or 5speed,Flyweel for said tranny,Crossmember,Driveshaft,Pedel assembly, and floor pan plate.....Oh,the gasser and Diesel trannies ain't the same. The gearing is off also the bellhousing bolt holes are in different places. Most people over on Oilburners(the Ford Version of this place) usually drop a ZF5 when the Automatic pukes.Or a built tranny from BTS but that is way up there in the $$$$.Also, have the C6 in that truck checked out first. They are pretty stout trannys and usually don't go south.
