okay so i made an unedumecated ASSumption. i didn't mean to imply that ford owns cummins outright or has a contract with them but simply that they bought a few shares...as far as i know(which apparently isn't very far) ford's contract with navistar won't be up for a while.

what i was really trying to get at was that i'm wondering...with all of the M-B drivetrain and chassis parts that have dodge badges(5 spd auto trans, E-class suspension platform and AWD in the 300C/Magnum and things like that...) from everything I've read dodge's contract with Cummins is up in '07-is that true or not??? and i was wondering if they would try to drop that and put the M-B diesel in.

but seriously, go easy on me, i'm a rookie in the diesel world(obviously ) my expertise is with small block chevy's and Pratt& Whitney PT6A turbines...not too shabby for a youngin'
i promise i'll do some more reading before i open my mouth again...

The contract was extended beyond 2007. I have heard 2011 by a Cummins dealer trainer.

At one time (many years ago) Ford owned a small stake in Cummins, but never anywhere near a controlling interest. Those shares were bought back by Cummins a long time ago.

I seriously doubt you'll see a Cummins in another Ford product (no longer available in the 550's or 650's either) anytime soon. Cummins wouldn't jeaporadize their very successful relationship with Dodge.

I question how much more power the big 3 can reliably expect to push out of these light duty diesel trucks.........610 ft/lbs?!?!?!!.........seems to me it wasn't very long ago that this was considered a lot of power for a medium duty truck and now we expect nothing less from our light duties.........transmissions can't keep up, axles get bigger and bigger, towing capacities are going through the roof, GVWR's are slowly growing and curb weights are steadily getting heavier - I gotta laugh when a 2500 HD with a 8800lb GVWR can have an empty weight of 7000lbs +..........doesn't leave much room for payload does it?(and isn't that why you want a 2500 HD in the 1st place?)..............My point is that when we see light duty trucks have factory tweaked motors that are pumping out 700 ft/lbs+(can't be far off at this rate), then how much longer can it really be considered a light duty vehicle?..........Bigger and stronger drivelines (read heavier) will have to be put in place to deal with this level of torque and this will just make the trucks even heavier still.......

Don't get me wrong - I'm all for more torque! ..............just makes me wonder how far we can really expect to see this go..........Cummins must be having a difficult time keeping a 325 hp engine detuned down to 610 ft/lbs of torque!

THAT, is what the other brands just don't understand!

Although I did drive my Uncle's 05 D-max all day, and with that Allison, I could get used to that thing. Maybe for a daily driver, but I'd still have to keep the Cummins for "Playing" (read anything but driving or hauling light stuff).
They are pretty quick though, I think my truck would have problems beating it. As long as I can keep up, I'll pass it by the time my rev-limiter kicks in at whenever the front tires start liftin' off.

Yeah the big three need to stop worrying about HP/TQ numbers, they should look at things like better quality, safety, more options, and better components. BTW dont the Ford Superduties look narrow? LIke a few inches narrower then a chevy or Dodge?

it is probably out there but i am still looking for the showroom d-max that can take my 90 ctd with that so called small pump. signature 600 u should not have a problem with a stock d-max.

Then again, that's what, a whopping 42 CI? I HATE the metric system, especially on American vehicles. Why are all of our bolts on our engines metric, anyhow? It peeves me off!!!
the metric system is the superior measuring system... i use both [mostly SAE at work though] and the metric once you get use to using it is easier to use... everything is in 10's, none of that 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64... and metric small measurements are easy too, 0.01mm is a finer number than 0.001"

as for all the engine bolts being metirc, cummins is an international company, and most of the world deals in metric, so that's what they provide...

48.82 CI larger is 800cc

1" = 2.54 cm
1" ^3 = 16.387064 cm^3

I hear that!......The metric system does make more practical sense because every unit of measurement is in multples of 10 and, like you said, since pretty much the rest of the world uses it, it is the international standard..........but like you, living and working in Canada, You have to know metric and standard - all our blueprints are in standard measurements........I'm part of the generation that grew up learning both systems of measurement so it has never been a problem for me but I have to sympathize with others that don't know metric......if it helps, it is much easier to learn and apply than standard!........I work with guys that don't know metric and guys that don't know standard!

LOL, let me have a go at ur uncles D-Max Signature600 Im just messin with ya buddy! Yes, the metric system is the most widely used form of measurement so it only seems proper for an international company to use it. lol...yea 325 hp in our motors equal...about what boys? 700ftlbs? There must be alot of programming in it to control the torque....like torque management...lol

I'd still rather have a Cummins...I talked to a guy that just got a brand new(last year) 3500 with the Hemi and he couldn't belive my "old truck" had nearly twice the torque and still got waaaay better mileage! Guess you get what you pay for...
