Just bought a Frito Lay truck with a 4bt in it and it has a water cooled/heated intake manifold right where the air tube enters from
the turbo. What are the pro's and con's of this setup for making power?
A 4bt that I looked at earlier did not have this setup.

air to water charge air cooler... it works, but not near as well as an air to air cooler.. the water cooler won't get the charge air temp down any lower than jacket water temp. air to air can get it down to close[er] to ambiant temp..

 

If this is going to be a play truck, plumb it to a cooler full of ice water instead of the radiator. Then it will be better than an air-to-air (until the ice all melts).

For a daily driver, like Nick said, it's better than nothing but not as good as an air-to-air cooler. Charge air out of the turbo can be as high as 350 degrees, so 190 degree coolant is cool by comparison.

 

add another small radiator for the water for the charge air cooler all byitself ,its cooler than the engine water
man how much didja get it for,drool

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I need to find a intercooler for it.
I'm putting that engine in another step van ( P20 Grumman 10ft box), its
much smaller than the frito lay truck so it should really be responsive.
I bought the truck through Dovebid.com . I ended up paying 2100 for a van
with 52,000 on it. It has 6 brand new Brigestone 19.5 tires on it which is
cool because I run that size on single wheel rims. It has a working back-up
camera, extra heater, etc.....
I did my homework before I bid on it.
I went to the frito lay center near me and talked to the mechanic there.
He told me those vans are on a 150,000 rebuild program. At 150,000 or more
the vans are sent to a rebuild center and get a FACTORY CUMMINS NEW OR
REBUILT ENGINE, rebuilt tranny, front end, etc... Then the odometers are rolled back to zero.
There is a sticker on the panel above the drivers window
that tells you when it was done and where. Mine was done at 174,000 in 2001.
That engine runs like a swiss watch, just perfect. I drove it home from
Syracuse to Buffalo, about 3 hours at 58mph max. When I got off at a
rest stop I thought the thing stalled it idled so smooth.
Looks like a need that 3200 governer spring.
