3/4 ton vs 1 ton advice...What to get...

Gents, need some input... I currently have an '04 duramax long bed, short cab 4x4. I love rams, so when I learned about the 0% on 06 models I had to check it out... so I'm about to jump. Now, I drove a 1 ton dully quad cab long bed 4x2 and a 3/4 ton quad cab 4x4 as that was all the cummins they had on the lot. The truck I will get WILL be a 4x4 quad.

My question is, the 3/4 ton had A LOT more spunk then the 1 ton, (obivously) but was it just the size difference, or was it the 4x2 vs 4x4 making a difference??? for only 2 grand difference between the 1 ton long box and the 3/4 ton short box, I'm kinda torn, but I do love that spunk. The one ton was definatly smoother I felt...

I tow a 31 ft 5th wheel on occasion, and a trailer or two with a tractor or grapes or whatever it may be... not too much you know...

What do you guys think????

Thanks everyone, lookin forward to my cummins whatever it may be... Johnny

Difference in rearends? The one ton probably had the 4:10 where the 3/4 probably the 3:73. But if you are going to do any heavy towing definately go with the dually fro the stability

I was looking at the same truck I mentioned, and it had 3.73's. It was a mover! I wish I could have sold my truck for what I wanted. I'd be driving the new one now (well...it would be in my driveway waiting for me). lol

You'll want the long bed for 5th wheel clearance (unless you get a sliding hitch), so go for the dually and take the additional GVWR that you'll need for 5th wheel and gooseneck towing as icing on the cake.

One ton. You can never have too much truck, especially when it is deeply discounted. With a big fiver, it is the way to go, or towing in general.
After all, we typicly buy these trucks to haul stuff.
You did not mention where you lived, why you like 4x4. Snow/off road is an issue, but if you do not do much of that, the 2wd is ok. Does it have lmited slip?
Lastly, a 1 ton truck MAKES a statement. It will not be confused as a lesser truck driven by a hair dresser.
Good Luck!!

you said the SRW was faster than the DRW - i think the dually is the diff.

my 4x4 QC SRW is ~7200

do a search, but the dually's are significantly more.

prolly gears too, 4:10 on faster (SOTP) trucks and 3:73 on one felt slow.

You guys are great...

The 1 TON has 4:10 gears... The 3/4 ton dosent say, only says "anti-spin differential rear axle" At least looking at the quote printout I have. Which gears are better? Why?

I don't have a sliding hitch, my reese out of my Chevy will be coming into the new dodge.

I know what you mean about the 1 ton...why not have that much more truck for only a little money... but I did like the get up of the 3/4 ton though...

I have 4.10's (bought it used). My fuel mileage is pretty good, but it would be better with 3.73's. For what you tow, I bet you would be fine with 3.73's. I rarely tow, and when I do, it's very light weight. If it was cheap enough, I would change to 3.73 in a minute! I say go for 3.73's

Like I said, the 1 ton SRW was 3.73. I would get the 3.73's if you don't plan on towing heavy loads 100% of the time.

I found out from the dealer that if you see a description of a Dodge and it doesnt mention anything about the gears assume it is the 3.73 rear end. (But you know what they say about assuming )

4:10 will decrease your mileage on the highway but will have a better ratio when pulling loads... I would just ask yourself how much you pull (long distances or short) hills ? highway ? Etc...
Good luck!

Do yourself a favor and get the 1-ton. A 1-ton SRW will have the same performance as a similarly equipped 3/4-ton. But you'll have more load carrying capacity.

xlr8r,
Fire Suit On
If that's the "statment" a 1 ton dually makes, I think I better start considering trading my black dually for a Prious

Maybe that's why everybody keeps their distance from me.
Must be the statment.

Get the dually ...you'll never look back. ............no matter what the statment.

ok the fire's going out....let's let this one die out quietly.
