2001 high millage 2500. What to look for?
Hey guys. Looking to purchase my first Dodge diesel and I found a 2001 Ram 2500, sport with leather & 386k on it. I plan going to take a peek at it and I was wondering what I should be checking for on the truck and asking questions about. So the owner far says its been on syntheic oil, has a 6-speed as well. Thanks.

That 6 speed is a nice option as far as longevity. I would check if it is a 53 block or not, prone to cracking. You should check for blow by too...i hope more ppl log and help out. I would have no trouble buying a well cared for Cummins with that high of mileage on it.

i wouldn't worry about it. the nv5600 6 spd. is a good tranny. the motor is good as well. drive it and make sure the steering is tight. otherwise you are going to spend some money on the steering. trac bar is what goes out on these things. fuel pressure is also key. ask when or if ever the injection pump was replaced. ask the same thing for the lift pump. how much is he asking?

Another thing to look for on these trucks is rust. Take a look at the rocker panels, fender flares and the inside bottom of the doors. All of this is fixable but it will get expensive fast.
The most expensive issue on the 24V's is the injection pump. Make sure that it has been fed with good fuel pressure. The next hardest issue to deal with is the steering. If the truck wanders on the highway, you will have to do some front end work which can get expensive and time consuming.
