You can use any plant oils for it, but some are more common and cheaper to get. The most common will be soy oil, which is ok for spring through fall and will probably gel under 40F.
Canola usually makes better fuel for cold climates.
There is also the oils iodine value which relates to how much polymerization can occur. I think canola was okay in that regard as well.

Do a titration test on all the oil youre lookin at and also test for water content. Both of those will factor into the decision

Many cheap restaurants and fast food joints use lard instead of plant oil.
Makes lousy bio.

I think your not going to have much choice , to get enough to really use/need , you may need to just take what you find , then classify / separate as you collect .
If you end up having to pay , then invest in a testing kit , so that you can judge the value of what they have .
Any oil from either plant or animal will make bio , the difference is the amount of resources [ used to make ] & quality that you end up with .

I use the waste (soybean) oil from 2 different chinese restaurants.
Watch out for restaurants that use 'shortening' instead of oil. It's not good quality for making biodiesel.
Also, when you make arrangments to start picking it up, make sure they understand that it can't have water in it or other (cleaning) chemicals.
