ULSD question.
ULSD question.
I had understood that after 1/1/07, the only diesel fuel for sale would be ULSD (15ppm sulphur), and that the old LSD (500ppm) would not be available at all. However twice in the last few weeks I have (happily) filled up with 500 ppm fuel at pumps that appeared to be brand spanking new. What gives? are they just phasing it out or was i wrong when I assumed the ULSD was going to be universal? thanks.
There are some locations it is still available. It will eventually be completly phased out. Different areas of the country have different deadline dates. Why I don't know. It may have to do with left over storage of 500ppm.
At the pipeline I load at only 15ppm ULSD is available in on road diesel. We still have one co. ARCO that has high sulpher off road diesel & that to will be phased out before long. We load ULSD with dye injected into it while loading for non taxed off road use.

Read this URL: http://www.clean-diesel.org/highway.html and it sates that:
Refiners and importers nationwide must ensure that at least 80 percent of the volume of the highway diesel fuel they produce or import is ULSD-compliant by June 1, 2006.
Diesel fuel classified as Low Sulfur Diesel fuel may still be sold at retail locations outside of California between October 15, 2006 and December 1, 2010.

The above reply says it all. LSD will be sold till 2010 but not many places. There is nothing wrong with ULSD. Strict lubricity requirements have to be met with ULSD. Have been running it in both my vehicles (06 TDI, 06 Cummins) with no probs for a year with no additives. Only 1996 or prior engines may see problems with o-ring dry rot.

I have noticed in my 01 when I don't run any additive my motor is allot more loud and it seems sluggish. When I add my usually power service amount it sure does quiet the motor down and it has a little more pep in its step. Why I don't know but I can be for certain that I will be running power service all year round now as before i just ran it from September to June. Also when I am up in the higher rpms towing my trailers it seems more smooth also all the while my fuel psi is 13psi at idle and around 9ish at 2000rpm and with no additive my fuel psi is 12psi at idle and around the same giver or take a few clicks at 2000rpm. So for me its additve year round plus it makes my truck happy.
I didn't notice any differences or problems with ULSD until winter temps. Combine with 2% bio and not a good winter here.
This applies to off-road (primarily ag) & heating fuels only.

From my URL above: All highway diesel must be ULSD by 10/01/2010. So some places can chose to sell LSD at this time, but I do think it is only in limited places that chose to do so.
