ULSD Comment

Yesterday I went for my bi-weekly fill up (at a Mobil station that has stickers saying that the fuel is not Mobil) and noticed something different. The pump had the new ULSD sticker about not using in 07 or newer vehicles. I noticed as the fuel began flowing into my tank, a fairly strange but recognizeable odor. I pulled the filler nozzle out where I could see the fuel going in and noticed that the color was not the "Normal" yellow/greenish color that on road fuel has been being for the last year or so. It was actually a brownish green color and it smelled of Diesel Kleen. I know that they are adding lubricity product to ULSD. I now wonder if it is Diesel Kleen or a derivative thereof (poor Wally World gonna lose all of their sales haha).

I also noticed that where my truck has been consistently running about 16.5-17mpg, this tank (198 miles so far) is averaging 20.3. I know that the readings off the overhead console are supposedly bogus, but mine compared to hand calcs only varies .2-.4 mpg different. I also have not changed my driving habits on this tank of fuel, so that has no bearing on MPG. Anyone who hauls fuel have any comments on the lubricity additives they are supposedly blending in??

I haven't seen the sticker yet where I normally fuel up, but I have seen it on the pumps where I work. But I didn't really check the color or smell of the fuel while fueling up my big rig.

I will definitely check next time I fuel and will also keep an eye on the pumps where I normally fuel my CTD.

If they have stickers on the pumps saying not to use this fuel in '07 models then wouldn't they be pumping regular #2?

The sticker indicates that the pump is still dispensing LSD (500 ppm) diesel fuel. The 07 models require ULSD (15 ppm) fuel. That's why it says not to use the fuel in 07s.

That's the way I understood it. The stickers around here say it is against federal regulation and may cause damage or failure to use it in 07 and later models. I assumed this meant that the fuel was still the same as it has been for several years (not having been changed to the new Ultra Low) and not to use it in the new rigs beacause of emissions standards and potential damage to the emissions systems of these newer vehicles (since they were designed to run Ultra Low. My only question is when someone gets a new rig where the heck are they supposed to get fuel?

We still have the stickers on the pumps at our stations. I'am already haulin the ULSD to these stations, but until the old LSD has been completly blended out of the tanks the stickers will remain. They figue several tanker loads to do so. So if you buy an 07 truck you might want to go to a high volume station or truck stop, where you can be sure the tanks have been purged of the 500ppm diesel.
