I was pumping diesel at a local gas station and I noticed a new sticker on the kerosene pump that stated it was dyed red and was not to be used for highway use in diesel vehicles. I was under the impression that you could not run kerosene in diesel vehicles due to the lack of cetane. Is this true??

Its not the cetane , its the lack lube thats the biggest issue .
You can make that up with bio-diesel , 2 cycle oil , hyd. oil , but you have to find the percentage of oil added .
the red dye is a very expensive issue if you get caught .

believe its like running #1 used to mix it with #2 to have winterized fuel when we would have a real bad cold snap. running it straight will burn motor i believe

I dont plan on running it. I just didn't think you could run it in our trucks without severly damaging the CP3 or injectors. A friend of mine has been running it in his farm tractors for a while now with no problems

You can run it at 100% without damage to the pump. I'm not sure why you would want too, but it will run and not hurt anything. The red dye signifies it does not have road tax added to the price and is for off road use.

I have used kerosene to thin out some #2 fuel in my tractor to keep it from gelling up in the winter. I only use it for blowing snow and its been good to -30 by doing that. Straight #2 has been good down to 10. I usually have some #1 or kero in it by then. In a pinch I have used straight kerosene in it to get me by. Not sure why you would consider running kerosene, its usually way more expensive.

I ran jp5 in my 97 for a long time nearly all diesel military equipment can or does run on jp5 or jp8 without issue. come to think about it when I was at sj afb they used dodge ram diesels for tugs around the base and they all ran on jp8 their entire life

Around here Diesel = $4.79 a gallon Kerosene = $3.25 a gallon

Are you guys sure it could be run with just a little power service for lube?

Sure but #1 has less cetane and will result in quite a bit less power and mpgs. With that and the fine if you get caught factor you'll have to figure out if it's worth it.

Where I work, our entire fleet of vehicles (around 5,000. Combination of Detroit Series 60, Cat C13, Cummins C8.3, Cummins ISL and IH DT466E) has been run on 100% #1 ULSD for around 5 years with no problems at all. They just switched over to #2 ULSD a couple of months ago for the sole purpose of saving around $2,000,000/year.

I think I may try a tank of 1/2 ULSD and K-1 with Power Service added in for lube. I found some undyed K-1 down the street.

My 1992 owners manual says to run 100% kerosene in "arctic" conditions.

About 10% less BTU's than #2 so expect 10% less MPG.

Thats funny cause the fill hose was only about 2 feet long. I had to park REAL close to the pump to fill it up. The cashier gave me funny look
