Cetane Ratings/Additives/Fuel Quality
My truck started to act funny on the last 50 miles of my trip home. I mentioned this to my friend and he said I more then likely got poor fuel and mentioned low Cetane fuel was the culprit. He actually described my problems to me and said that he had those same problems when he either towed at Rocky Mountain altitudes or got poor fuel (Low Cetane). Symptoms were slightly noticeable sounds of Detonation and no acceleration when the pedal was advanced to accelerate. Eventually it was clear up and accelerate. This only happened at 1/4 tank and below. I havent yet drain the water seperator but am getting ready to do that now.
The manual states we need minimum 40 Cetane Rating. How do we determine that? What additives out there can increase that rating? How much do they cost and what are your experiences using it? Do you only use it when you fill up and notice the problem?
Thanks

I run Power Service Diesel Klean. Running the recommended amount increases the cetane by 6 points. One 32oz bottle runs less than $5. I use 16oz per tank.

i also run ps w/cetane boost and can say that i get better fuel economy with it too. buy a quart and a big jug of (3qt i think) and refill the small one in between fill ups. it is cheaper that way.
