Put in 7 gals of "used" diesel oil in the current 1/2 tank of diesel last night. Noticed a slight burnt oil smell out the exhaust but hey I've owned tons of old fords so I'm use to the burned oil smell! Other than that motor is nice and quiet.

Note that this ratio is prrobably somewhere around 30-40 percent "used" oil

So do you still need to run an additive like PS or something? Or does the WO do the trick. Can I use waste oil from anything, or just my cummins? I am thinking of setting something up to reuse waste oil. From what I have read it sounds really useful. I have some tanks and extra fuel filter setups from tractors, so if I can make it happen...I will. It is a bummer that synthetic is out though...can I still burn a few quarts per tank or is that a really bad idea.

Thanks for all that you guys know...this place has helped me more times than I can remember.

I put in a gallon of used engine oil in to my tank last week. I noticed a little more smoke on start up and when i'd lay into it on the highway and it did quiet it down a touch too.. i only had 3/4 of a tank of diesel and some Schaeffers Soy Shield in my truck at the time. I think when i change the oil in my truck next i'll dump all 2 1/2 gallons in. The first gallon i put in came from my moms 300. I know synthetics are out for this but what about Rotella 5w40, i've been told its not a true synth and thats what i use in my truck?

You sure about that?
All the folks I've talked to have said synthetics made their rigs smoke a lot.

I usually only add 3 gallons of used oil but in my p.o.'ed disposition on local fuel prices 3.09 a gal I threw in all 7. I won't do it again unless I fill the rest of the tank with diesel cause I did notice a power loss, not big one but if it's noticeable it's big enough.

I just put another 5qt in my 3/4 full tank. If I top it off there's no room for oil. I'm afraid to put the oil in before I fill up.

I see no reason why synthetic won't burn OK. oil is oil. I would think that any oil would have a little better BTU content because it's thicker.

BTW, just looked at the Conoco in So. Coffeyville, OK and it's $2.59 cash price. It's about 15 cents lower than unleaded.

If it's truly synthetic it won't burn (teflon). If it would burn heck I'd run it just think how your pump would benefit. And for adding oil when low on fuel my typical practice is to add 3 gallons when I'm down to 1/4 tank then fill up to get it good and mixed up. I only add oil every other fill up that way I know the oil has pretty much cycled through. On the off tank that I don't any oil and the I/pump is still as quiet as can be which means there's still oil in there from the previous tank. Even at every other tank, that's still saving some $$$ as well as lubing the fuel sys.

Diesel here is about 20 cents a gallon more than premium, bunch of *&$*%#(*^$*&)% criminals! Too bad the good ol' goverment won't step in where needed and leave the Bill Gates folks alone, but that's another story!

Edwin, up here we are at $2.80.....

I burn a gallon per tank, last time I put in all three gallons from the oil change at once, I was making more smoke at start-up than I was happy with.

i have been running WMO in my truck for a while now. a little over 10K. 3 gallons every fill up. i have a few diffrent people i get my oil from. i was told to shy away from synthetics . well i run the lucas additive in mine, and it burns just fine. and have also burnt synthetic blends. but a straight synthectic oil will smoke and stink like no other. so if you have a some synthectic, mix it with some dino and you will be good. unless you want a lot of unwanted haze, and stench.

Is it the pure synthectic aditive (black label) p/n# 10131 or 10130? If so how much additive are you running. The reason I as is I've been running the Lucas pure synthetic in mine and haven't wanted to try burning it. I run a half gallon in mine.

synthetic

northslope,

i run a 1/2 gal. in mine as well. it burns fine mixed with the dino oil. but i made the mistake of running 3 gallons of straight synthetic. it was a haze fest for sure! but i have mixed the synthetic blends with dino, and havnt had a problem. i get a little low idel haze no matter what oil i have in there. but with the pure synthetic it really hazes, and stinks as well.
