Question Black diesel

Wondering what folks are doing to filter waste oil and use it as black diesel. From what I understand, allot waste oil ends up being refined into #2 anyway. No lack of used motor oil and at $3+ a gallon for diesel fuel, looking for options. Thought about the WVO option, but small town and very little chance of getting WVO.

What are you using to filter the waste oil and how much $$ to do so would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I bottle it straight from my pan. I would imagine a pretty good fuel filter would do the trick.

Maybe an additional fuel filter would be a good idea.

I've been dumping mine into 1 gallon jugs and letting it sit a month or 2, so that thte larger particals settle out, then I just filter through paper towels.

DS1RIDER, any problems with the fuel filter getting clogged? How often do you have to change the fuel filter?

Jeremy Cusick, I thought about using paper towels to help filter out some of the junk. How long have you been doing this and any ill effects?

Thanks!

I havnt filtered any. I only use oil straight out of my truck and family cars. I dont trust what all is in the oil at lube places(trannyfluid,brakefluid,...) I would hook a circulating lift pump with a filter on it if you have larger quantities.

Somebody somewhere makes something (informative, huh?) that automatically cycles some crankcase oil out of your crankcase and into your tank, while simultaneously refilling your case with a little reservoir.

Never have to change or dispose of oil that way.

I'm sure that somebody else knows the details...

Could you use coffee filters as a filter media? Just set it up with a drip, so it drips into the filter, then drips into a clean container.

I tried coffee filters first, wouldn't run through them.
I've only done the paper towel filter once (only time I've run waste mototr oil. In every gallon of oil, I had to use 2 paper towels... 1/2 way through the gallon, the first paper towel plugs up. I'd think paint strainer wouldn't filter as well as a sheet of paper towel.

Probably the best thing would be a 2 stage filtering system. First run with a course filter, second one with a fine filter.

I think you mean Cummins' Centinel Advanced Oil Management System which takes a small amount of waste oil, highly filters it and injects into the fuel while adding fresh oil to the crankcase at the same time.
here's some info

at work, we set up oil transfer pumps for our customers using one of these pumps.

and a 20 micron filter, you could use a finer filter tho.
