Making BD from algae is no different than making it from any other plant material except that it's very easy to grow and prolific. Most people think of algae as the green muck you see on the top of a pond when in fact many species extend deep in the water and can yield thousands of tons per acre.

One thing cool about fuel from algae is that it addresses an ongoing concern--- water body pollution from farm fertilizer and feedlot runoff. Excess fertilizer causes algae blooms that block off light and use up oxygen, killing off the native fish and vegetation.
Last year with heavy spring rains in the mid-west most farmers had to reapply their fertilizer, the first application washed away. This was cited as the cause for a huge "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico.
Algae ponds along rivers could be used to suck the excess nutrients up.
Maybe a new use for the city of New Orleans?
