Would this be a simple swap?
For a project build-up, I was thinking about putting a 5.9 ISB into a 1500 4x4 regular cab, short bed Ram. I know the original BullyDog race truck was the same set up; but I want a fairly simple swap.
Considerations:
1. Is the engine compartment dimensions the same?
2. New motor mounts concerns. Easy swap or fab new?
3. Steering column alignment?
4. Undercarriage concerns with tranny, t-case, alignment w/1500 frame?
5. New custom exhaust.
6. New custom driveshaft.
7. 3500 computer compatible with 1500 electronics (from dodge to dodge)?
8. Is the frame on the 1500 the same strength as the HD's?
9. Will the suspension parts all swap?
etc

Cutting down a 2500 does sound easier for sure. But, doesn't cutting and welding on the frame create some weakness? Just want to make sure it's as strong as factory (or better) for heavy hauling and towing. If it would be, then I guess it's just a matter of shortening fuel lines, drive shaft, exhaust, wiring, etc?
2wd or 4wd?
Shortening the truck is easy. Weekend project, plus the wait for the drive shaft.
I think the swap would be fairly easy too. Especially if you have a donor truck. There are plenty of 1500 drag trucks, so the frame should be strong enough.
Why would you need to swap suspension parts? You can do air bags if you need the added load in the rear.
Should be able to use an exhaust system for a 2500. No real custom work needed.

4x4. I'm wondering how good of an off roader (nothing extreme or competition) a light weight Ram with a Cummins and some 37's up to 40's would work. Of course setting up the usual stuff as well, like suspension, lockers and such. It would also tow a trailer from time to time but a tire swap would fix that.
