So, post up what engines you guys think can/are/would be suitable for a diesel conversion. I suppose it's ironic since it's a cummins conversion subforum, but what the heck.
I don't have anything to post until I get home, but so far some proposed engines from the other forum are:
Deutz
Cat
Cummins
VW TDI/TD
Kubota
Toyota
Mitsubishi
Isuzu

I would consider a mechanical DT466, its only 200-300lbs heavier than the 6BT and its external dimensions arent that much more than the 6BT either
I also think If I an old 6-71 Detroit would make me smile in a heavier truck like an old 1 1/2 or 2 ton.
C-7 Cat wouldnt be any slouch under the hood, would make a lot of people take a second look when you lift the hood and see a huge yellow motor stuffed in there...
Sorry, no specs, just dreaming...

The Perkins 6-354?(not sure of model name) is a somewhat popular engine for conversions. Many pickups were converted before diesel pickups were very popluar. It is about the same size as a 5.9 and it is a very efficient engine if I have heard correctly. As a matter of fact, a member of this forum has converted a 75 ford F-350. The 354 was available in small Dodge and maybe Ford trucks from the 50s to the 70s. Also, the engine was used in Massey Ferguson farm equipment and in other industrial applications.
The 354 Perkins were put in the early dodge and inthe land down under they were put in fords I have a 6.0Perkins 1000series when I bout it new from perkins it was called [Detroit Phasser] now cat owns them. The masseys had 354 and 372,the 372 were turboed I had on in my ford before I put the 3.0 in it.They are very good motors lot of lowend torq.have a 5" strokeand they have dry sleeves in them real good on fuel milage. If you get a 354 or a 372 out of a combine you need to buy a balancer from perkins for the street I found out the hard way after I broke my crank in my 372.

The R428 is about the same wieght as a Cummins 3.3 but with 160hp and 295ft-lbs. THe RA428 has about the same power, but is 33lbs lighter. The RA630 is going into Cadillac CTS cars in Europe, and hopefully the USA in the not too distant future.
We have over 40K miles on our Liberty CRD , and the engine has been flawless.http://www.vmmotori.it/en/01/01/dett....jsp?autoId=53
These guys have some Kubota, CAT and other small diesels:

I have never done business with them - so can't say anything good or bad.
