nv4500 conversion question with pics

i have a question about hooking up the nv4500 from the getrag in my 1990 ram 2wd - In this pic of the getrag you can see a connector on top (i'm guessing for the backup lights)

and in this pic is a big thing hanging off the drivers side of the getrag (I'm thinking speedo)

Size: 90.8 KB

but in the pics with nv4500 theres only the connector on top
(looks like the connector is the same as the speedo from the getrag)

and thats it. There is no second connector anywhere on the nv4500
tranny - I looked everywhere - In the same spot that was on the getrag
for the speedo is just the housing for the nv4500 tranny

so is the connector on the nv4500 the speedo or the backup
lights in the aluminum tower part of the tranny?
and what do I do about the missing connector? tranny is from a
94 dodge diesel 2wd...thanks

i would say that connector on the nv4500 is for the backup lights, i'm thinking you ought to be able to put the tranny in reverse and meter the plug for continuity,....the speedo on the truck the nv came out of my have been on the rear end but i could be dead wrong

Yes, the switch at the top of the NV is your backup lamp switch. You just need to find a connector and splice it on.

All the conversions I have done were 4WD, so the speed sensor was in the transfer case and I didn't have to worry. The NV you have looks like it was from a 1998 or newer truck, after they moved the vehicle speed sensor to the rear differential. You can see the spot formed into the casting of the extension housing on your NV where the speed sensor would go on an older truck. No idea if an older extension housing (with the hole) would work on this transmission, because it would need the worm gear on the output shaft to drive the sensor, and I don't know if your NV would have it or not. You may need to find an NV from a pre-98 truck. If there's another way around it, someone else may know.

If your NV4500 was from a 94 2wd cummins truck then it should have the hgole drilled for the speedo. I have a 95 NV4500 in my crewcab and it has the speedo hole.

Check the metal tag on the side of the NV4500. Should be bolted to a couple of the bolts on the inspection/PTO covers. This will tell you exactly what year and application your tranny is from.

If you need the wiring connector for the NV4500 switch you can check out my thread over in the 1st Gen section. I just went through this.

Checked it out - the tranny is from a 97 - I also got the shifter in today - is the base (the bottom part of the shifter that goes into the tranny) from a 94 tranny thinner than the base outta 97? seems like I have alot of slop from side to side - thanks for the tip about the gm backup conector!

Your tranny is most likely a '98 up CONFIGURATION, if the following applies:

1. No speedo hole, as this one doesn't have.
2. The shifter is retained in the top cover with 4 small bolts.

Another way to get a year range is, looking at pic 3 of the main post, there is a tag affixed to the PTO cover.
On this tag is a build date, anything after July 15th can technically be called the next model year.

If you swap the tailhousing, it's possible to convert this tranny to the pre-98 configuration, all you need is the plastic gear that rides on the mainshaft and the gear's retainer.

You will also need the speedo pinion gear, with the correct tooth count for your gear ratio and tire height, plus the pinion gear housing, it's clamp and bolt.

Mark.
