Thanks for the update and glad to hear your conversion is still running well. You're about to pass me for mileage. I'm at 23,700 mls in 2.5 yrs. I'm going to be "stress testing" the engine this afternoon. It was -26 F air temp (-52 F wind chill) this morning on the drive to work. The high is supposed to reach a balmy -8 F air temp. I've got an older "spare battery" in the back of the jeep in case I need to jump myself. Hoping my 16% biodiesel blend isn't gelling in my tank . . .

It started and got me home! The main battery I'm using was enough to run the grid heater for ~8 seconds and crank the engine over and get it to start. Instead of starting nearly instantly it cranked for about 2 seconds before firing off. I kept cycling the grid heater (~3 secs on, 3 secs off) until the engine smoothed out, which took about 20 seconds. There were no clouds of black smoke, but the exhaust seemed a little darker than normal until the engine smoothed out. I'm glad I had the fresh battery installed . . .

Official record temps for Cedar Rapids yesterday was -29F air temp in the morning and the high was -12F air temp. It's about the same low temp again this morning but we're supposed to break 0F this afternoon. It'll be good to get back to single digit highs

I think having the timing advanced several degrees also helped the engine start. Not sure with stock timing how it would've went.

I put in a tank style block heater yesterday and went to plug it in and popped the breaker... Great. It still starts every time but I would like to have heat on the first half of my trip to work.

So far my best mileage is around 29 but I'm hoping for more with a block heater and the engine broken in a bit more.

Are you still running stock timing?

IIRC TDIwyse advanced his timing ~3 degrees & 3.3Sonoma advanced his timing ~5 degrees. Both experienced an increase of 2+ mpg. All the info is contained within this thread.

TDIwyse has some "how-to" pics in his flickr photo gallery. http://www.flickr.com/photos/10201173@N06

It took me about 2-3 months of driving the Passat to figure out the best driving technique. I gained ~3-5mpg. But, that car gets 42-43mpg around town.

I'm confident you can increase yours by 2-3mpg; it just takes time to figure out the torque / hp curve and your particular gearing.

This time of year I'm lucky to break 30 with the jeep. November I was averaging 28.8, Dec 28.9, then Jan dropped to 27.7 (brutally cold and lots of snow). My lowest tanks in the last 3 winters have been ~25 mpg and happened in the months of Dec-Feb. Mook, I bet you'll be mid 30's this summer! Keep us posted.

Idea

Does anyone know if a jeep T5 clutch will bolt up to the 3.3 flywheel? I have a SAE 4 bellhousing off of a transmission. Although the bolt pattern isn't for a T5 transmission. It has 6 bolt holes for the transmission and I am going to try to adapt it to the transmission. The nose cone on the transmission fits and the depth is good. The bolt holes don't line up and I don't have a jeep clutch to compare with. Any thoughts or ideas on this. I will try to add pictures later.

I personally haven't had much luck with T5 transmissions. I grenaded one behind a stock Chevy 2.8 V6. If I was going to all the trouble to make an adapter plate, I'd use something more robust.

I've uploaded a few more pictures to flickr including pictures of my Phoenix Castings adapter set. This set is different from the others I've seen. Also, have a picture of the turbocharger with the compressor housing removed and the new hole I drilled to re-clock the housing 180 degrees. Link is in my signature.

And while I'm thinking about it. Could you guys (TDIwyse, Macet, 3.3Sonoma) possibly add the links to your photos to your signatures? It will make finding your pictures for referencing much easier. Thanks!

I was glad to see no fuel or soot in the oil. It seems to me that the engine is doing well in the modified condition its in.

Also replaced the front steering linkage (tie rods, drag link, etc.) as the old ones were shot and rusted up so bad I couldn’t adjust them. Also put in a manual steering gear box. It’s much tighter feeling and easier to steer now. Was also able to align my steering wheel so that when the jeep is pointed straight the steering wheel is aligned correctly (that had always irritated me).

Also, found a small coolant leak at the connections by the oil filter. Tightening the hose clamps stopped the leak. You guys using this engine might want to keep an eye on some of the clamps . . .

Looking at my spreadsheet I'm at ~24,600 mls on the engine since July of 2006. ~135,500 on the jeep.

How's your conversion progressing?

Hey I passed you in mileage already. Im at 25,750 miles. Over 156,000 on the Sonoma. I have seen a drop in mileage with the cold too. Still getting 35 on average. The other issue I have had with mileage lately is my right foot. Less jobs seem to make less traffic around Chicago and see a lot more 80-85 mph crusing speeds on the tollway.

That's some outstanding mileage for doing that speed! You're now the mileage leader in the 3.3 world
