Sled Pulling rules
Sled Pulling rules
Im looking for some general rules. I want to do a little sled pulling this year but I want to be sure not to do any mods that will put me in the classes with the BIG BOYS.
I understand that every sanction has its own rules but there must be some sort of basic rules that apply to all, and then more specific ones depending on class. I have looked all over at different sites and I either get old rules or no rules.
Help a fella out.

I suppose I better start wearin some bigger pants then.
What other mods will I be needing?
Am I under the right assumption that I wont be needing a weight bar, I think I was at 7200lbs last time I weighed?
I know I will need ladder/traction bars but what else?

Around here there isn't alot of rules besides no funny gas, a 26 inch hook height and most of the time a 8000 pound class you should go over to the show-mesmokers and look at there rules. Ya a wieght bar would be nice to have also would be some traction bars I'd like to help you out more but I'm just not a sled puller.

I'm not sure what DHRA ever decided on a set of rules (maybe someone can chim in on that.) Sometimes local pulls will adopt their rule set. But i agree with haloman in that youll be in the 2.8 class. Its a VERY competitive class. Hanging weight out front with a weight bar and ladder bars would help quite a bit. Just make sure you have fun and oh yeah...once you hook once you'll be hooked for awhile Sled Pulling can be pretty addicting.
Thanks guys I'll check into all that. This friend of mine has a big time gas puller and I told him I was gonna try it and he says take it to the drag strip................................. So now I gotta do it.
Your gonna be running in a class with some very hot trucks. I am from missouri and we just got the rules pretty much donw for the Show Me Smokers pulls. What pulls are you gonna be doing in Missouri? Your gonna be running in the 3.0 class since we got rid of the 2.8 class and made it a 3.0 class. You gonna be running with guys from anywhere to 800hp up to 1000hp. That turbo is really whats killing you. You are defiantly gonna need ladder bars to keep from breaking. For more information on missouri pulling go here.

If you're only at 7200lbs you better get a weight rack and start binge eating cause you're gonna need the extra weight. Drop your spare tire and tailgate so you can add that weight to the front as well!
kman9090 How far away are alot of your pulls? I'm probably about 1hr to 1 1/2hrs from you. I'm trying to decide if it would be worth it to do some pulling with you guys or just buy a 2.8 turbo and go on from there.
As far as the rules, you are right about different areas being different....and they change along the way. Most of them have turbo size/number, weight, wieght bars or not, min. suspension travel, hitch height, and a few others depending.
Do yourself a favor and get a good two disc clutch setup. If you pull much you will be replacing it often. It is just part of it. The main problem is good pulling clutches are not designed for street use, so you just get to replace them. To do really well you have to be able to ride the clutch long enough to get the sled moving in as high a gear as you can pull. This is particularly true for the big single turbo guys. I have seen guys ride them for 75ft or so on a hard biting track.
If you are pulling a newer inertia sled with a pan drop you can get away with less because they are easy to get rolling. These are also VERY important to pull as fast as you can. If you are pulling old iron then you will likely have a hard time getting the sled moving and speed is a little bit less important.
Another thing is some kind of drive shaft loops and u joint shields. If you grenade one, it can hurt you or someone else. They are not usually required, but they should be.
