sled pulling gear choice question
out of curiosity...what advantage is pulling in 4th-4 low over 2nd-4hi????
4th-4low has a ratio of (1.39x2.72) or about 3.78
and using 2nd-4hi has a ratio of (3.38x1) or 3.38
I thought the lower ratio for more wheel speed would be better? is the higher ratio easier on the drivetrain. im just curious looking for an explanation

2nd gear hi range will give you more wheel speed and be a little easier on the drivetrain.
4th lo is good for a heavier sled and will help keep your motor lit but not enough wheel speed to usually be competitive if you are limited by rpm's (like under 3600).
All the video's in my sig are 2nd gear hi range except for the last one.

well im running the range of about 570hp now do you think it will benefit me to stay in 2nd and high then?
my vp44 limits me to about 3400 and then it dies off really bad.

35's, 3.54's,and 2nd high on a 6-speed equals quite a bit of gear if the sled's heavy or the track is tight. I've got a spreadsheet I downloaded from a TDR member that shows speeds based on transmission, rpm limit, tire size, and gears. In 2nd high, you're at almost 29mph at 3400. In 4th low, you're at almost 26mph (assuming a 35" tire is actually 34"). If there's not a huge amount of competition in your area, 4th low will go a long way ....

I only have a 5sp but I pulled in Hi 1st then I tried Low 2nd, I went a lot farther in low range cause i was able to keep the rpms up. but my truck was completely stock the last time I pulled it. It'll be interesting to see what it does this years with the mods I put on it. Good Luck !
