pulling truck

my nephew just found a 1st gen reg cab 4x4 farm truck needing tranny work
i was hoping it had 4:10's under it but it has 3:56's
the auto trans has no reverse and you have to shut it off to get it back into low gear after it shifts
we were thinking of buying this and starting to build a pulling truck( my check book just sobbed)
this thing goes good in the pasture but like i said it has a ton of tranny issues.

what do you think of pulling with the higher gears? should we keep looking for lower gears before hooking?
the big kicker we can get this running 12v for 350.00

gears will depend a lot on what tranny you stick behind it... are you going manual or staying auto?

Run (and pm me with the location of it) lol, sounds like a good basis, gears are relatively cheap, also if you check around you could probably find a 727tf for not a whole lot of money and have it built a for a lot less than the 518 that is probably in it. All in all if it's a running 12 valver then the engine alone is worth many times more than the purchase price.

"They" say a final of 15 is good.

Here, play with numbers...

If you do not want it let me know I will have a truck and trailer there within a day to pick it up. That is exactly what I have been looking for.

Around here at least I think the auto's tend to be more consistant pullers and most of the time I'd say they have an advantage over a manual. The auto's will let you build up alot of speed early and then you can downshift as the sled get heavy towards the end of the track. If you have enough power I think the 3.56 gears will work but they are going to put more stress on the rest of the drivetrain.

If you want to check out the differances.. here's a thread that has some of the ratios listed.. I started it.. but someone added the R&P info...
The 205 T-Case in the 1st gen's is gear a fair amount faster than the case in the 2-3rd gens...

if you swap to a 727 go with a full manual valvebody. if it dont bounce your head off the back glass when it shifts it aint tight enough. GOOD LUCK finding a company that even offers parts for it though......I called Jegs and TCI, Jegs dont even list anything, TCI dosent even have a core, you will have to send them your tranny and they will build it with no converter for $2200. but you can buy a full TCI street fighter for a big block with no converter for $900.......someones getting screwed and i think its daddy.......gotta love when you slap diesel on something and the price more than doubles........

personally id just through a NV4500 behind it with a twin disk and be done with it. i realize now i wont be building an automatic.

$2200, holy smokes, did you tell them they're smoking something and its not #2. I just looked at Goerend's price list and the standard transmission with a torque converter is $3250 and thats an overdrive lockup unit, the only problem is finding a core to send back to him.

just handed the man some money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
our friend will rebuild it with some leftover stuff for about 150.00 just to get it goin. then over the winterhe says he will build me a good trans. i'm hoping to get in a late pull somewhere in mo,ia,ne late this fall as a farm stock or stock class then do some work this winter including a new trans. the other friend who works for cummins said he has some tricks to add to the motor as we go along and maybe in a few years i will have a "hot" truck to do some serious pulling with. but for now i just wanna pull for fun! ( like that will last)

Now don't go blamin' me on this. I can hear you now. But Honey! I just found out about it today online, it's Satburn's fault for not telling me sooner!!!

I get enough trouble on my own, I dang sure don't need your wife calling me too
