drag racing in 4hi with front locker

any of you drag racers have a locker in the front? how does it behave in 4x4? I want to get a locker for the front for offroading and am wondering how it will affect 4hi launches and stuff

Not sure, but wouldn't locking the front diff make it very difficult to steer?

We'd definitely need to see a video of that carnage!

you'd definitely need to have the front axle disengaged before you attempt turning on the end of the track.

I agree, its not the straight line race that is the problem. Trurning off the track would be the issue.

I would think it wouldn't make a difference driving straight down a track. But when you would turn it would surely bind.

And hope you never get crossed up in the middle of the track.

ARB or another selectable locker would be the ticket for the front. I really don't think you need one in the front for racing, i don't think anyone runs one for that purpose.

im not buying it for drag racing, just offroading. im just wondering if I will have any problems racing with one using 4hi. maybe I can just lock 1 hub instead of both. that might be ok. and turnin at the end of the track will be ok, it will be a cheaper rachet locker, not a full detroit.

Trying to launch with only one hub locked in will result in an instant u turn, it will not be pretty.

I had a locker in the front of my old 93, keeping the truck straight was impossible over 35-40 mph on hard surfaces.

An ARB would be your best bet, so you could unlock while racing.

cool, what about a limited slip in the front, like a powerlok for the D60?

I run an ARB in the front, and only use it locked when racing. I lock it before I stage, and unlock it after the finish line. You have to remember to unlock it before turning off the track, or you will not be able to make the turn. Kinda like forgetting to take it out of 4x4 only worse. Having the front locked helps with the consistency, not only at the launch, but also helps with tire slip during the 1-2 and 2-3 shift. One word of caution... Put the switches where you can get to them in a hurry. I have never had a problem, but if you get in a situation where you need to turn, you will want to unlock the front. I have about 400 passes with the front end locked.

Paul, how much steering input are you able to give with the front diff locked?

I can give it a lot of input... It just doesn't turn much! Seriously I can get it off the track with the front locked. After doing it a couple of times though, it will make you remember to unlock it. As far as going down the track I have plenty of input to correct for torque steer if it spins off the line, and things like that.

Cool! I wonder if you could leave it locked if you had a detroit locker type wratchet in the front driveline!
