I had about 15-20 hooks on my sbc 3850 before it needed rebuilt.
BUT....I caused the premature failure by pulling 5th gear with 600hp.

How many pulls do you think the 3850 would last on your rig otherwise?

I think it could have went another 10 hooks no problem.
Keep in mind I street drove the truck everyday for a year and a half with that clutch.

So probably two years on your rig set up like that and providing that much fun and usefulness - no wonder you like it!

I've run a few different ones:
1. Haisley street twin (organic disks): It made 5 pulls and started slipping...my own fault for pulling with it.
2. Mitchell Puller: 6 hooks and broke a floater. I put a new floater in and sold the truck before I pulled again with it. The disks were ok, but nothing to brag about after only a few pulls.
3. Haisley Street Puller: I bought it used with 35+ hooks on it. I put another 8 or so last year. I wouldn't hold direct drive, but pulled the whole year otherwise. I sold it this year to my cousin, it's still going strong.
4. Kenny's Machine Triple Disk: I ordered it too late to use it much this year. I've only got two hooks on it. They were back-to-back hooks within five minutes of each other and it took a good slipping each time. Time will tell how long it will make it.

I got it about 2 months back if memory serves right.
I smoked my 3850 pulling the stupid big gear.

On a similar note:
Byron Haner who is in Washington state (I know like a different country).
Runs the "big gear" 5th Lo and pulls pretty regularly without destroying the clutch.
Of course, he is twin turboed so he doesnt have to walk it out trying to keep a big single lit.
Another thing is the tracks out there are dusty and very forgiving.

59Dsul,
Your going to have to venture out our way next year we need more good running trucks down here!

House,
On another note: I am not sure you are going to find a clutch that lasts over 30 or so hooks.

i have tried 1 to 1 low range twice and with the traction and weight of the sled there was no way i wouldn't ruin my clutch in a few pulls. i guess it just depends where you pull.

Does driving a DD clutched truck for a daily driver hurt it's performance at all? My next clutch will be a DD. I know it's meant for pullin, but if you're not a dedicated puller will it shorten it's lifespan(whatever that is)?
