4X4 and Drag Racing

Question on using 4x4 during the drags. Do you leave in 4X4, or do you take it out during the run after take off??

I take it out of 4x4 in third.... just so I don't forget about it before turning off the track.
Have read that taking it out is faster, but I have a hard time wrapping my mind around that idea??

I take mine out at the end of the 1/4. I don't think the front will disengage while you're in the coal.

I leave it in.. From my understanding it doesn't disengage at wide open throttle. I have tried it anyway, and my times stayed the same. I don't believe it disengages.

I leave in it 4x4 until after the finish line. Couple of reasons... One, is that is just one more thing to thing about in those 12 seconds. Two, during bracket racing if I am ahead of the other person at the finish line, I am going to get on the brakes, so I don't take a chance on breaking out. It's really embarrassing to be ahead by a couple of truck lengths and break out by .002. When I do get on the brakes I do not lift on the throttle. I keep it pinned to the floor. Now picture this. Wide open throttle (65psi + of boost), holding the brakes, and two wheel drive. Know what happens? A 110 mph burnout! It took me a little to figure out what was going on (okay, so I'm a little slow sometimes), but it was actually a SFI safety tech at Boise ID, that told me if I kept doing burn outs across the finish line they would disqualify me. That was a couple of years ago, and since then I just leave it in 4x4.

Oh yeah. The reason for not lifting on the throttle... First if you lift on the throttle that fast you will bark the turbo, and possibly air lock the injection pump. Two, if you have to get back on the throttle, it's way to late to build boost again.

Welcome to the website!

As you can see the members here do things differently on the dragstrip.
On my trucks, I always push the transfer case lever from 4WD High back into 2WD after the truck leaves the line and shifts into second gear. Also, I never let out of the throttle from the time I leave the line until the time I hit the traps at the end of the dragstrip. You are not doing anything wrong by pushing the lever out of 4WD High into 2WD.

Same here, of course if I'm bracket racing I will get off the throttle if I have room.

I leave mine in 4hi until I have slowed down before I turn off the track. I do not think it is going to release under WOT of hard throttle like stated above anyway. I don't mess with mine going down the track because I have other things to concentrate on and the fear that I might push too far/hard on the shifter and cause major damage.

It will go into 2wd no problem at WOT - if you are under 50mph. The question would be - does your truck still spin the rear tires at 50mph? If so, you'd need to leave it in 4wd.

Must be a 48RE (3rd Gen ) thing?
Mine doesn't.... and as I said above I don't buy into the "it's faster" reports. But I just got into a routine that I don't want to modify and relearn.
1-Lock up switch 'on' in second gear
2-Out of 4x4 in third gear
3-Unlock OD at 3000 rpm (shifts around 3300 rpm)
4-through the traps
5- Lock up Switch 'off'

Just what has worked for me.... so far!
Would be nice to be fast enough that I didn't have time to count out my 5 steps.

HOLY CRAP! How many times have you veared into the other lane? That's a lot do remember - let alone do.

I always shift mine into 2wd after the 1-2 shift. In my 02 it actually made a difference in trap speed. In my 02 the the 4x4 shift is in the transfer case only and I believe it disengages. In older models, such as a 97 the transfer case disengages as well as the vaccum assisted collar in the front axle. Your new-gen should disengage.
Just my 2c.
