Big Rigs Talk about other Cummins powered vehicles here. As a matter of fact, it doesn't even have to be Cummins, but it will be diesel! :)

NTC 300 cummins from 1985....any good?

looking at an older tandem with an NTC 300 under the hood, anything I should be looking at in particular? any reason to avoid the ole girl, starts and runs good from what I've been told by a neighbor that's seen it, going to look in a few days so any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

That was a pretty decent motor. Baby to the bigger bore but same block. All in all reliable but as you may suspect not a power house.

We had one in a 88 Freightliner glider that we bought and made into a wrecker. One of my guys did a service on it while I was on duty at my other job and filled the engine with hydraulic oil. The driver was in New Jersey dropping when he called and stated it had low oil pressure. He drove it back, (was told to) and made it with no real trouble. Unfortunately it needed a complete inframe. I was amazed that the crank was not wiped. I pulled the complete engine and put a Cummins Recon 400 Big cam II in it. This was back in 1998. We just sold the truck with 1.2 million miles on it, appx 450k on the recon engine. Was very sad to see it go.

for a tandem grain truck it wont see enough weight to need any more grunt than that (I hope)...... the ole girl also has a set of 4.44 rear gears to help with bottom end get up and go loaded.
Any idea off the top of your head what the displacement was?

Its 855ci. You can juice the low boost fuel setting in the pump with just an allen wrench. It will smoke a little when you lay the hammer down but not bad with that gearing, it will give it more grunt. We can discuss that once you get it.
