We have a 98 or 99 century class with a 60 series the sticker on the head says 500 hp. It never pulled that well, but one day two years ago, it just about shut down, serious de-rate. Could a bad sensor, manifold pressure, fuel temp, oil pressure, etc, cause it to de-rate without the check or service engine lights coming on?

We are using it for gooseneck duty, needs a clutch and power divider as well, I was hauling some water with it today and realized we did no diagnostics on it, just parked and replaced it.

Laptop, yes. Code reader or DDEC programming, no. I don't know if Corry tried using the cruise switches to pull codes or not.
I'd like to get the DDEC programming. I'm looking at snap-on right now and they have DDEC/MBE from 01-06 but not older.

 

I think Corry has some sort of deal to plug into the truck, but doubt he has anything for Detroit for it. He hates Detroit. Trouble is the Cats he likes like their fuel too much (and need at least a 13 speed behind them).
What years do each of the DDEC numbers cover?

 

You can get an OTC heavy duty code reader for $500.00 from Snap-On. It will read all codes from 1996 to present on any class 6-8 engine. It will also clear them. Good tool for the money however it is limited. DDEC software will set you back several Gs. Unless you have a fleet of them dont waste your money.

A failed sensor will send that engine into derate if it was enabled via a laptop. All depends on who bought and spec'd the truck.


I use this for the quick stuff. Comes with the 2 connectors you need, also lets you chose between data buses on the newer 9 pin.

There's a company on evilpay that is selling a refurbished laptop with a bunch of diagnostic software in it, I think it's NEXIQ, for about $2000. I sent them an email asking what it would run with just the DDEC, CELECT, and Dodge/Cummins and Duramax/Allison programming.

I'll have to see what Corry has for a reader and see what the DDEC for it runs and is capable of. I know the local Case dealer used to be a Navistar dealer, they've got a code reader and have thrown parts at our stuff trying to fix it off the codes it threw.

 

you can easily pull the flash codes. you don't need a scanner to do that.

with the engine off. key on. hold the over ride switch for 5 seconds. that will start the sequence. the red stop engine light flashes are for active codes, the yellow check engine light flashes are logged codes.

pay attention. cause if theres lots of codes you can get lost quick. flashes 2 digits for each code. flash code 25 is the code, for NO CODES.

 

BTW I have the flash code chart for DDEC 3/4 and 5 here with me. And DDEC 6 at home with my wiring schematics I'm pretty sure.

 

I don't think there's an over-ride switch. Seems to me that you pull the codes with the cruise switches in a Century class.
