Since my computer crashed big time yesterday, I have been in the process of rebuilding it. The only problem that I have now is the machine does not "see" the floppy disk drive. In other words, it does not know it is there. It does "see" the hard drive (obviously) and also the CD drive. When I go to the device manager it says it is working properly. I can't seem to figure this one out. Any ideas???

Pull the cover and make sure all the cables are connected nice and snug, then reboot. You may also need to go into the CMOS and make sure your settings are good there as well.

 

Tom, I tried disconnecting the floppy and re-booting then shut it down, hooked everything back up and re-booted. NOTHING. the drive does not light up like it used to and it didn't make any differance when I re-booted the machine. What settings do I look for in the CMOS? I would really hate to screw it up again.

You might try flipping your IDE cable around at the floppy drive. Some of them are not notched and can be inserted either way. If it is connected the wrong way the drive will not show up.

Worth a shot.

 

Since the computer does not show that there is an A: drive it tells me that it is a software problem. It did work before and since I had to use the restore CD (for the first time) it is no longer there. Dang I am gettin' tired of this stuff.

 

Update: I went into the CMOS and found out that the drive was disabled. Don't quite know how that happened. Anyhow, I finally feel like I am beginning to win this battle!!

 

There ya go! If the OS can detect the drive, chances are it's a CMOS setting if you can't access it.

Who uses floppy drives anyway these days?

I build all my own computers and I have always and will always put a floppy drive in.

Even in today's world I can not tell you how many times a floppy drive has saved my butt. There have also been many times I have been asked to fix a friend's computer and I could have done it easily if they had a floppy drive... but alas not many people are including them in their computers anymore.

It may be old and outdated, but it still has its uses.

 

I just built a new computer, at $14 for a panasonic floppy - how can you go wrong?
