Big Rigs Talk about other Cummins powered vehicles here. As a matter of fact, it doesn't even have to be Cummins, but it will be diesel! :)

Don't take NO for an answer?

This is what happens when you have a driver who drives like Jeff Gordon, Does not give a **** and refuses to take no for an answer. This was a FRO15210C. It chipped 2nd, 3rd, 4th and direct. Both countershafts are chipped. Input shaft is toast. Blew the PTO out as well. Driver said it just happened at the yard.

Two things can cause this. Dumping the clutch or lose bell housing bolts. The bolts were tight.

If a whole tooth was not missing on the top countershaft input gear I would just put a new input shaft and bearing in and let it ride. But I have to tear it down so it all gets replaced.

But what the heck. Job security!!!!

And he still has a job?

With the state of the economy, I think I would be looking for another driver.

Look at the main shaft closely. I bet after a shock load like that (if thats what caused this) it is twisted as well. At bare minimum the key has to be broken but you will see that when you pull it down.

"Just happened in the yard."

Yeah, right...

Some people just have no sympathy for machinery, they will beat a truck mercilessly and fight with it to gain fractions of a second. It's so much easier to just take your time and work with the truck instead of fighting it. Plus you don't break stuff...

OUCH! I went to work hauling crushed cars part time about a year and half back. Out of 4 drivers I was the last hired and only part time, but I was the only one they wanted back. One of them was kind of a cowboy, another ran into stuff and the third one ran into stuff and broke a tranny and rear axle. I wondered why I got a much better rig than he had when I came to work. Guess that explains it. I backed into one yard and Rick had one of the KW's on a step deck. He said Bill side stepped the clutch and broke his second tranny. Turned out it was a snapped pinion though. Just can't do that kind of stuff and expect it to stay together.

The only reason they stopped the truck was because the rear ceramic clutch disc exploded. The springs came out and the sheet metal got hung up in the splines so the clutch would not disengage.

DmaxEter I have seen that many times as well. I am waiting to tear down because the owner may opt for a tripple S unit. I need to price all the gears for comparison. Things are uber tight now. Hell I would not be surprised if they park the truck.

I am so glad we sold the family trucking, mining and construction company 12 years ago. Now I just **** with other peoples fossils.

I have crossed paths with this driver many times. This is at least the third tranny he dusted that I had to work on and god knows how many clutches and rears. He can wear out 3 sets of brakes to a normal drivers single set. You can't tell him anything. He is a little guy with a big attitude. I was very surprised to find he is working at this company.

I will get more work from them if they keep him for sure.

If this is the case then the company has no one to blame but themselves.

I wish I had kept the Old Man. It was a 1962 B77 Mack with a 20 speed quad tranny. That thing would pull anything. You barely felt a 200000 pound mining shovel on it. The road would buckle behind the tires on a steep hill. Use to blow newer rigs off the road with a 60000 pound dragline on the trailer. It would just start to smooth out when other rigs were on the governor. The only problem was keeping an exhaust on it after a long hard run. The stack would glow at night. Only a few are left. A truck collector got it. Willie Nelson has one.
