Water Pump

This weekends project----Looks like the water pump on my 2001 decided to weep/cry while i was gone on holidays-----came home after 3 weeks on the road to find a few drips on the floor. At first i thought it was coming from the rear of the truck(head gasket)but i traced it back along the oil pan and sure enough the pump is wet.Is "CUMMINS CALGARY" the best place to buy from?????Probable change out the belt too + Fluid Damper while i'm in there.I also have a new PA Performance 200 AMP alternator sitting on my parts bench for the last 2 years looking at me waiting to be installed that never got around to putting on.I am thinking the o ring on the pump may have taken a dump for being a truck that is 11 years young and sits most of the time with 62000 KM.THANKS DW

If a NEW, OEM water pump was still available, that would be my choice, hands down, whatever the price. Have seen so many problems with rebuilt water pumps, I stay away completely. (Not for any specific engine.) There are several choices of new aftermarket water pumps out there, and I would consider one of those. But, looking at the long lifespan of the factory Cummins pump, that's where I'd try to spend my money.

When I bought my 04' the dealer I bought it off of had replaced the water pump with a cheap chinese junk knockoff. About 2 months later it was leaking again, got it replaced under the dealer's warranty but about a year later I came out of the shop after work one day and noticed a puddle under the truck. I had to do the water pump again, this time on my dime and labour. I probably could have replaced the o-ring (which I found to be the cause of the leak) and been on my way but I decided to ditch the crappy quality parts and go for the good stuff.

That being said I went to Cummins Western Canada in Edmonton and picked up a water pump and belt there. Also bought some new coolant at NAPA and did a flush while I was at it. It wasn't cheap by any means but when I put the water pumps side by side on the bench there was no comparison. The Cummins unit is a much better built component.

OEM is the way to go for this sort of stuff as far as I'm concerned. It might be a bit more than the other guys but it's worth it in the long run.

That's good to hear you've had good luck with them. Do you recall the brand name of those pumps at partsource?

Thanks,
TF

I would check to see if the belt tensioner still works. Sound off that your pump is leaking. Mine still works, its an original at 320000km, 2002 piece. Saying that, my fass froze solid (corrision) from lack of use. My 02 has been under repair for the last four months. Been driving the new truck for the summer. Still starts and runs awesome for a old VP truck.

I think the seal is dried out but will replace the whole assembly for piece of mind. Thanks fellas for the suggestions----i picked up a "NEW"pump at Cummins today ($150.00),and i will get a Goodyear Gatorback serpinetine belt from Parts Source tomorrow(80.00).PSSSS------ something new to me as i went into Cummins though, the parts guy wanted the serial # off the engine and a "VIN" as he said that its difficult to get the proper parts for my ride without it---i made him work for his money .Seems to me the water pump is pretty common part/same part for the 5.9 don't you think.DW

oh not so, lots of changed has occurred to that simple 5.9L water pump. Different pulleys and even open faced/closed faced pump impellers. So far I've just seen the same # of blades and diameter for the impellers. Some of the newer stuff has closed faced impellers. The vin supprises me abit for cummins, the esp of the engine should have worked.

but odd things occur when you don't drive the truck.

Learn something new everyday---Thanks Mike, this one is a five blade,"NEW" , as the parts guy said Cummins is only selling new pumps,---- no more reconditioned as they have been having problems.I will log more miles on it as it is mostly my ride to the weekend getaway from now on----the Mrs likes to tool around on the weekend in the dually.CHEERS DW
