Warranty question

OK. I'm looking at a couple of trucks. Unfortuneatly, given the environment nowadays, they have been chipped prior to 160K. I'm wondering how you get assurance the warranty is still good? Can you take it to a dodge dealer? Will they give you something in writing?

Thanks

I am not sure about that. I do know that when you plug into most modern class 8 (big rig) trucks and change parameters that A) some parameters are off limits unless you have a code from the manufacturer, and B) you leave an electronic footprint. Now I can not say for sure about the Cummins in our trucks but if Cat is doing it for warranty purposes, would not Dodge be aswell?

Smarty's claim to fame was that it left no footprint in the truck's computers. Must be something to that.

but big rigs have the software for doing that , it's easy for a tech on lets say a volvo d16 to going in the set that the truck can not run more then 2300 rpm and any gear but high gear , or if egts are great then 1000 it defuels so it won't burn up the engine , with the software in a cummins b engine the engine is not set up like that ,you can't go in and change things like that , it will tell you highest rpm , misfires , low voltage , bad sensors , but if the tech that is working on your truck wants to be a dick he can tell if your truck has or had a programer in it , they teacher you how to tell if it had one , but paramiters witch i know thats last word is spelled wrong ... is the only they can get you on over rpm , low fuel , etc all tell tail signs ,,,, but i think 2010 's are different so one if my buddy say that still works at dodge says ... at the dodge deal i worked at we worked on trucks all the time that had programers no one cared it's no skin off there back so we never said anything ... to bad the dealer is in ontario

The only way right now that a dodge mech can really tell if you have had a programmer on there is key cycles. All the rest is up for interpretation. And even for the mech to get to the spot to check key strokes is over most guys heads. So I guess in the short story version,, I wouldnt worry about it. But as mentioned before, the warranty sucks, they will do everything in their power to figure a way to blame you for anything that goes wrong.

Depends on the dealer, some dealer's a better than others. The last two years, dodge has gotten better. I have two sets of speakers in my 08 1500 and a new front end on my 07 str 300 The old days, it was a coin toss. They seem to want to work these days to get customer in the door. That said, what you buying, what mods you planning on? I think most dealers are cool with dpf delete's, air boxes, cat backs, stereo's and remote starts. most times anyways. Good luck.

My initial "improvements" will not affect the warranty, at all, and by the time I get to "those" improvements, the warranty will be done... I was more concerned with what would happen if I purchased a truck that a chip had been in... If Dodge hadn't known about it, would it still be in warranty. Consensus seems to be that if they don't actually see it on the truck, no problem.

My first mods will be...

Mudflaps
Rockguard (ie - bedliner on the rocker panels)
rustproofing, and...

Aliarc bumper. Too many close calls with deer lately. I suspect the wife will want nerfs or running boards as well though.

Oh... and gauges of some sort or another... std tranny, so don't need tranny temp. I'm guessing egt, fuel pressure, and ???

BTW, with the newer trucks (06-07) are the fass/airdog etc. for fuel as critical? I haven't been keeping up with the lift pump issue... I like the idea of installing one for fuel filtering reasons alone... not too worried about power down the road... stockish is good enough for me (for now, I know... ).

You'll probably be ok with most of those mods, just the guages and fuel pump stuff will drive the dealer into over load. My dealer blew his top on my twin turbo truck the one time and it wasn't under warranty and I need some AC work.
