Turbo rebuild or upgrade

The 05 turbo seals appear to be leaking. Do I rebuild it or upgrade it ??? Is the rebuild difficult, or do I send it out and where to ??? Or what upgrade would you guys suggest ?? Other than twins. As much as I would like to do twins I don't know if the cost is worth it for me.

Daily driver.
Haul or tow what ever I can hook onto, mostly 24' stock trailer.

If you do twins yourself, they can be done very cheap, under $1k. Ask Brett, he just did a set for his friend. S400 is $650 brand new. Just need a couple flanges, some pipe, oil lines made and drains.

You could talk to Alamo for a rebuild kit. I rebuilt an S300, its pretty simple, three bearings and two piston ring seals. The Holset is likely very similar.

Any chance I missed something when I unhooked the turbo oil drain. Just wondering if my crankcase pressure could have started coming back out the drain line. I'm really just amazed that there is no pressure at all when it is unhooked. Hooked it back up and the oilcap will just float there.
Just making sure before spending needlesssly.

Your crank case pressure will definitely escape out the open drain nipple. But that is to be expected. Are you leaking oil into the compressor or turbine housings? I wouldn't worry about air going past the seals of the turbo, as the oil pressure is always higher than boost.

A failed turbo will add artificial crankcase pressure as well. If you had an air compressor on the accessory drive that failed can also add artificial crankcase pressure.

Just trying to rule out the turbo as the cause of my blowby. Before I dig any further. So can the turbo seals cause high crankcase pressure ?? As soon as the drain line was unhooked there was not even a hint of pressure at the filler cap. I might have to try it again and make sure there is no pressure coming from the drain line.

Yes exactly. Pulling the drain kills the crankcase pressure. Condems the turbo not the engine.

Not necessarily. Opening the drain is like adding a second vent to the engine. Gonna flow a lot more air out of the crank case.

I just did a HX-35 up at Alamo, complete rebuild with a larger high impeller and trim compressor housing. Still haven't picked it up yet. It was abit cheaper than new, but not much cheaper. I had to have it rebuilt, the turbine shaft was heavily blued and compressor impeller/shroud was chewed up some.

Cheapest turbos are the S300 on a T-4 flange, with no wastegate. Could look into a larger high flow impeller for the stocker.

The BW EFR stuff is becoming available. Hoping to try one out soon.
