Truck popping, white smoke
Truck popping, white smoke
So I've had this problem before where if I accelerate hard at low rpm my truck starts popping and I get white smoke, it hasn't done it for a long time, but I recently lowered my smarty setting to sw-4 from sw-6 to try to get better mileage. While on sw-6 I never had this issue. I've got some video here, you can see the white smoke but it's hard to here the popping, just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this

Had same problem a few years back when I was running a TST. As soon as I went to level 2 or higher it would pop and smoke, sent it back and they found nothing wrong, while installing it back on truck I tugged on a wire in the truck crank sensor harness and it pulled right out, removed and repaired with recrimp and solder on all wires in connector and never had another problem.

Hey Brad, my truck started similar popping when I 1st installed my twins & started running my Smarty on higher levels.
For me it was when I was jumping or slamming on the throttle. Popping & white smoke, backfire out the exhaust.
I had no check engine lights, My lift pump pressure & rail pressures were fine, I checked my pressure relief valve for bypass leaking & it was fine.
I thought I had it fixed by increasing rail pressure level in the Revo Smarty programming but it was increasing the injector timing that cured it.
I don't think you have any other modules on your truck, just the Smarty right?
As I'm sure you know, the even (4 & 6 in your case) levels in the Revo Smarty with timing set to default means NO timing increase over stock.
Try adding timing in the Revo options or running odd levels 5 or 7 which is the actually the same thing.
I hope that fixes it..

Good tip Joe, currently I am running no timing (I think). I still haven't quite figured this TNT-r out yet. I'm really tempted to go back to my beta programming, this thing just ramps up so aggressive, it's hard to drive sometimes. You are correct Joe I do not run any modules, but I still have my dr. P pressure box that I would like to throw back on. I'll throw some timing into it and get back to you guys
Well I tried lvl 4 timing 1, it was worse than before, got a backfire a few times. Does it at all rpm if I stab the throttle now. Joe, how much timing are you running, seeing as you had the same issue? I will try that before I decide to pull my injectors and have them tested........
According to the info I have, software #4, timing = 1 would still be stock timing. The TNT timing setting are kind of confusing, they are different than the REVO. But, from a dude on ABDiesels, and he gave me a disclaimer on this info!:
Timing settings for TNT:
0 = 1 on even sw# and 2 on odd sw#s
1 stock
2 more advance than 1
3 less advance than 2 (but still more than 1)
4 less advance than 3 (but still more than 1)
So if you are running an odd # in the software and default timing = 0, it seems you are also running the most advanced timing.

^^ That's it exactly.
It is confusing when it comes to the timing options.
I'm just running Revo regular not even TNT regular. I run Timing at Revo option 2 (or default in Odd levels which is the same thing).
Re-reading Brad's 1st post, he says he was running Level 6 with stock timing & it was running fine. That's weird.
Brad, have you tried going back to where you were (Level 6 with same options) & had no issues? Something doesn't quite make sense.
Also, make sure to always write down your current Smarty settings.
After loaded, you can only "view" your current Smarty level, you can't view or check your Revo options & it's very easy to forget.. Ask me how I know!!
I am having the exact same issues as you Goat5.9, I just recently put in a Industrial Injection turbo along with Piers 50HP tips and mine is awful now, rattles extremely harsh and i get that popping when I stab the throttle also and it usually does it at around 1700rpm. I also wondered if my rail pressure needed to be cranked up a little more, but im almost to the point where i think my truck is fueling to hard down low and almost feels like its flooding the cylinders with fuel? Im not even seeing turbo PSI past 35-36 lbs. I should be making 40 easily. I have tried every setting on my Smarty with REVO from lots of timing to no timing at all and nothing changes. How is your truck when you take your Smarty off and put the truck back to stock? Mine still rattles hard and tries to pop but doesn't.
Also since my factory turbo went out on me, I paid the difference for an aftermarket turbo through dodge and decided to put the tips on as well. Since I got the truck back its been terrible, I've taken it back to them 3 times now and the last time it was back they sent my injectors away to a shop in the city for flow testing and they came back perfectly fine, he tried a new ecm and still nothing. They cant even figure it out. The mechanic that works on my truck just did a complete rebuild for another guy while I was there a few times and he put almost the same setup as me on his truck and when it was all said and done his was popping also like mine. So they are now trying to tell me this is normal, and its not...i've been on this forum long enough to know this isn't normal and doesn't happen to hardly anyone on here. If a drag truck popped and farted around like mine they would lose seconds off there drag times no doubt in my mind.
