Anyone have suggestions on a buddies '98?
He dropped his tranny again - it is a slushbox. He doesn't run any crazy power or anything, but just as I found on my '98, the autos can't handle the low end torque and low speed while out maneuvering on trails to get out to hunting spots.
Any manuals out there for sale or full proof fix on the OEM tranny. I put six in my '98 before I got rid of it and swore I'd never own another slushbox again.

Festus, what when wrong inside the tranny? Did he get lots of metal shavings? I would just get a decent rebuild kit, valve body upgrade and decent torque converter. If the truck is stepped up in power you might want to find a specially store. How often did the tranny oil get changed out? I change mine even second or third oil change? Usually the filter gets plugged up and then the line pressure drops (application pressure/holding force onto the clutchs). Usually its that or its heat that ruins the tranny fluid. Again changing oil often fixes that issue.
I'm thinking about putting in 3/8in tappered plug into my front and rear axles so I can change oil without removing the covers. I like servicing my own truck.

I'm not sure what happened inside this time - i don't think it is apart yet. I just learned of this when he called to say his truck was out of commission for hunting this weekend. It has had decent rebuild kits before however, and still piles up.
On another note, I think I made my clutch slip in my '07 last night. RPM came up, but not alot of seat of pants giddy up. No burning clutch smell though.

I may have to start another thread on here searching for clutch parts or just call Harry at Peak?
I guess I'll take clutch suggestions now - mods are in my sig, Smarty POD is set to just a moderate increase, light towing to 8000lbs normally only during hunting season with only the occasional heavier load. (Kevin! It must be your fault!

I took a peek at this on PEAK's website:
G56-OFEK 2005.5-2009 5.9L and 6.7L G56, 475hp/1000ft.lbs (requires hydraulic kit upgrade)
I believe the lower priced for $800, rated at 375hp and 800 ft.lb of torque (doesn't require hydraulic kit upgrade) is too small for my application.

I got an OFE from Harry at peak. Great to deal with, and he beat everyones prices by a good margin. Nice clutch.
On a side note, I had smoked my stock clutch a lot of times (stuck in the snow, or performing) and when I pulled it out, the clutch looked fine. the reason I changed it all out was my truck would shake at idle. Turned out the springs in the dual mass flywheel were shot.

Like I said in that text, I'd go with a dual disc clutch. Smoother than the FE (which you will want when it comes to pulling trailers), you can slip them for a good launch (boosted if so desired), and for the one I have, not all that much money. My 3250 was $1200ish plus input shaft (not needed for you). There are CR's that have put down over 700 hp through that clutch.
If you want, you can come take my truck for a spin and get a feel for the DD clutch.
Valair or SBC, I don't think you can go wrong. There are some real cheer leaders for SBC here, but there haven't been that many issues with Valair that I have heard of, and the customer service was top notch.
