Stock 5-th gear nut

Tate gave me this idea of a double nut, welded together then the last nut,I'm going to drill and tap a set screw...Here is the problem....I can't find a stock 5th gear nut in Calgary....Does anyone have a used nut kicking around their shop??

I just lost my 5th gear a couple of weeks ago. I've decided to go with the torque king retrofit from quad4x4.com

This was Tates idea...I was going to take the orginal nut and drill and tap two holes for set screws...Then we looked and it and seems there is enough tread to do a double nut...So I'm leaving the orginal nut because its still OK and has not backed off...Take the nut that Curtis sent me and I will tap that one and weld just the nuts together and have set screws on the last nut...There should be enough clearence on the tailshaft and the last nut...but will not know until I get the nut in...What do you think Shane??

Sounds like a good plan, although I may not be the best person to ask. I would trust Taters recommendation.

I will send you a related link if I can find it.

Here is what I did...Orginal nut was out of torque about 25 foot lbs..Tapped two lock screws in orginal nut.Re-torqued to 300 foot lbs.Second nut was also tapped with two lock screws and torqued to 300 foot lbs. Both nuts got locktite red. Then both nuts got 4 small tack welds. Will it hold, who knows. If guys welded the nut to the shaft and that didn't hold, how would this work...But I did find one thing...If a nut has backed off and was re-used,it will show a distective wear patten on the nut.I found this comparing the orginal nut to the one that Curtis sent me..Cutis told me the nut sent, did back off once, and did show the wear pattern compared to the orginal,as I know never fell off. This is very similar to the "Torque King" setup retrofit without the washer and gear sleave and gear..

Those set screws are pretty small. If they arent tapped into the inner shaft Im not sure how much holding power they will have.

You may just have pioneered a new fix...

I wouldn't weld the nuts together. Put one on and lock it down then put the second one on and jam it up against the first one and lock it down. This way you can jam the two nuts against each other.
