That was 1400 miles and one quart....I'm going to top her up and see how she does..The weather in Sask was insane with windchills of -46C,long idling and high fuel addatives.Even with the rad completely covered,I had a heck of a time keeping the engine temp up.

Dave, its just oil. You might get more HP out of the old girl. Its not like it gonna cause any issues or hurt anything. Lots of hiway truck use a few litres a day. Its cheaper to just add oil than rip into her. Mine just leaks oil and diesel everywhere, so I just watch where I park it. I could be at the same oil consumption as you. If it gets down to far, I just do an oil change. I used to have cars that you had to add oil when you fill-up the tank with gas. Made a nice smoke screen on the fast get aways (it seemed fast anyways at the time)

I go 10k km on my oil changes. Going through a litre every 2400km is 4 litres. I go through less than that, and my truck has some serious leaks (thats the 24v). And it has 396k km on it. If you're idling, you're not under boost, so oil can go past the seals and into the intake. The big puff of blue on start makes sense as oil bypasses the seals and pools in the intake and exhaust tracts. Like Jason said, the piston to valve clearance is very low, just make sure the cylinder is at TDC before you pull the valve keepers out.

hey on your next oil change put a bottle of Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer . in the oil and good oil , see if that helps ... i run it in every thing and none of my trucks use any oil and one has 500,000km of hard kms

At those temps you might find the standard oils stay 'heavy' and tend to cling to the cylinder walls longer than a synthetic oil would. This allows the oil film to get burned int he cylinder and thus, you use a bit more oil. If you're running a synthetic already, it might need to go thinner, especially for winter.
just a thought.

I go 30,000kms between oil changes on Amsoil, I usually add 2-3liters within that timeframe. My truck has 415,000kms and is driven 8-10hrs a day 5times a week. at 400,000kms that 1/2 life for the engine (500,000Miles before rebuild is reccommended)
I'm thinking of extending the oil change as the oil reports keep comming back fine, and to re-sample at my next schedualed maint interval. I usually change the oil every 6months.
