Oil Consumption

Is this good or bad....I don't have any oil leaks on the motor.I burn about a quart of oil every 1400 miles....Is this ok or is the girl getting old?Or maybe driving the truck at -35 with wind chill of -46 could be the reason it burnt a quart...

Nothing wrong with that. My chevy will go through spurts where it will use about 2 quarts per oil change (10000km) and then like this last one, none,, its kinda weird that way

Dave, you get any blow-by on the motor vent?

I usually burn a litre every oil change (10K). That is a little high, but if has been doing it all the time it shouldn't be a problem, or did it just decide to be thirsty?

Probably have bad valve seals, letting oil into the intake and exhaust passages.

Maybe thats way I see the blue lagoon when I start it cold. Also seen another post of someone burning to much oil..He said it was the fuel additives that where doing it.Once he blended out the diesel the oil consumption quit..I was running a stiff dose of power service when I went to Sask.

Valve seals are easy, you just need a valve spring compressor for a 12v. I don't know how you can put compressed air into the cylinder beside using a injector to keep the valves closed. I would see if the oil consumption continues in the next several months. You been doing lots of idling? Just run cheap oil. Mine makes a nice bluish/black cloud when starting cold, it could just be the injectors/injection pump configuration.

Mine usually uses a quart at least between changes, once in a while it will go through 2 no rhyme or reason to it. That's even with the new head i put on a couple years ago.

The CTD has pretty close to zero valve clearance to the piston. I bet you could do valve seals without air and just have it at TDC. The valves would only drop about 0.100" I think, we did that to find TDC for setting the pump timing.

Usually you would have more blow by for valve seals on the diesel. Not much vacuum on the intake side. But getting a refreshed head wouldn't be a bad thing either if the price was right.

To be honest dave, a quart to 1400 miles isnt anything I would worry about,,, that is miles right not KM's,, then it might be a little excessive

That's about 1 litre every 2400 km or 2L every oil change(4800km) I don't think that's good. 20% usage is way out to lunch. JMHO.

on a truck with over 400thousand KMs,, not too bad... if it only had 40 thousand, I would be upset,, but on a truck with lots of miles,, good to go in my mind,, oil is cheap in comparison to fixing it,,,,
