He said he just had his 1992 pulled back from Calgary , It was makin a horrible noise coming from back of the motor....

Roxxx Is it an auto or stick? It would be difficult to see the flex plate until you remove the transmission. I have a spare head available for that engine.

Hard to tell from this story. All the smoke could just be timing, but they don't slip with the VE pump.

Pull the valve cover and watch the valves while its running. May have dropped a valve. Onl 10min to get the valve cover off.

Good idea Clayh, can't hurt anything now. There are six valve covers, one for each cylinder.

Ahh yes. individual covers on those 1st gens. Its been awhile since I had my old '91. So 20 min then?

For the record when the flex plate broke on my '91 I had NO warning or strange noise. I had JUST finished a 2 week trip to Alaska with it and back and the NEXT weekend the flepalte let go. Tore the center out of it. It was turned up but all I was hauling was a 10ft slide in camper.

Another vehicle I worked on(1992 Jeep Cherokee with an inline 6cylinder) came in to me with a BAD bottom end knock. I told the owner the motor was screwed and he replied, "I JUST had new tranny put into it!"

DING! DING! Warning bells went off in my head. A quick look at the convertor bolts found them loose with no locktite! Pulled, cleaned and locktited each one and the owner left my house MUCH happier and relieved.

Its a pretty common failure. I'm currently working on rebuilding a 02 dodge truck. It has that stock flex plate, been wondering if the 6.7L flexplate will fit, as its a solid piece. I have one just sitting in my garage. Knowing my luck the starter will not work with it.

Been trying to hand bar over the ruined engine, man its one tight piece of junk right now. Might have to borrow Tate's barring tool again. I put in a bolt into the crank front snub (where the harmonic balancer attaches to), I bent the bolt. Probably messed up the crank. Usually you can hand bar them over that way.

I'll take some pictures and do some compare them today

Well looks like the flex plate went catastrophic. lottsa metal not sure how bad. We took the inspection plate off, not good when it has metal shard every where. Had chunks of the adapter plate fall out to plus flex plate teeth

Ouch! Sounds like a new flexpalte and TC are needed.

When I did mine I ordered a 2nd gen flex plate from Cummins. They are heavier/thicker than the 1st gen ones. Got the part number from the FAQ on here. Might be able to find a used one as well.

Also an aftermarket TQ on my '92 made a HUGE difference. Almost as much as changing out the turbo exhaust housing did.

Here are a few pics regarding auto engine/transmission adapter. Ones a 2002 and the other is off a 6.7L

I'll get my other adapter and post them as well. Both of these adpaters fit on the 2nd VP block and the 6.7L

Roxxx, Yes I do, but... I'm using it, sorry buddy. Sorry for being a tease.

I'll grab it and take few pictures showing the differences between all the different years. I have a 2wd VE engine buildup that on going. I'm using a manual shift RE48 on that engine.

I've been meaning on doing some checks on different block designs that I have to see what matches up and/or doesn't.

Been also wanting to see what it would take to throw a P7100 onto a 6.7L

Notice that the stock 6.7L flex plate is a solid piece.
