I'm getting frustrated!!!

Anybody in the Edmonton area willing to come have a look at my gen 1???
I have some engine issues and not being a diesel mechanic I'm running into a few problems.
The guy I bought my truck from said he had some mods done to the engine and I have added some stuff as well.
Adjusting valves, setting up the fuel pump, my turbo barking, etc is what I'm looking to fix.
I have a pretty much fully set up shop and it's heated and spacious to work in.
I am on the generous side and will provide good food and whatever you enjoy sipping on.
I'm looking for someone who has pumped up the power on their 12 valve and knows what they are doing.
I will also entertain you for hours with my non stop chattering as long as you like talking about guns, hunting and old army stories.
I also have to add I'm not a wing nut and their is no fear in driving into my acreage thinking "oh my god what have I gotten myself into"!!!
I'm not desperate yet, but I'm getting close. My truck had been down for a month and is showing no signs of leaving the shop.
Thanks in advance!!!

Pete

Talk to Luke (NoSparkPlugs), he's got a tuned up 1st gen, so he could probably help you out, and he's in St. Albert. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...er.php?u=34533

Guns, hunting, heated shop and a 1st gen? We're set bud. What exactly is wrong with the truck? Do you have any gauges on it right now? (Pyro and boost) The more detail you give me the better of an idea I can diagnose whats wrong with it. I'm up in Fort Mac till the 23rd then I'm home for Christmas but I'll probably be taking some days off before new years to go sledding in BC. But after that I'm in school for two months with plenty of time to spare. Shoot me a PM and we can work something out.

When the time comes to twist wrenches on it, if you're in need of some of the special tools, drop me a line. I've got the Snap-On special tool kit plus some homegrown stuff (charge air system pressure tester, fuel pressure gauge, boost gauge etc.) that could come in handy-and we never got around to tweaking Dad's 1st gen up before it was retired so I'd be interested to learn from someone who has done it before. I should be able to work it into my busy schedule I've been sitting on my fat butt since July waiting for the 'patch to come calling again.

Volt draw off of battery
Turbo bark
Running hot
Boost out of control
Making more black exhaust than normal
Peeing fuel out of the vent tube (I mean A LOT of fuel)
Need valves adjusted
Sputtering when I rev it up
Mostly the guy I bought it from said he had a bunch of mods done but couldn't tell what they were, therefore I'm not sure what if everything he did is doing what it supposed to do
Engine is making some funky sounds
Cruise won't work
Pryo is going up past the numbers when I put my foot into it
Turbo whine is getting louder
There is more but I can't find my list of problems,
I have been wrenching on this thing for months and it's still sitting in the shop
"nosparkplugs" said he'll swing by after xmas and have a peek so I dancing like a fool to actually have someone who owns one of these to help me with mine and set it up and give it a good looking over
If I need more help I'll post back up
Thanks fella's!!!!!!

Pete

1/2 of that list is all related, I bet because of overfueling / under air'ing.
sputtering rev'd hopefully only the timing is out.
turbo bark - you control with your right foot.
engine making funky sounds - could be anything. and with out a guy hearing it for himself, tough to internet diagnose. is it an auto or stick?

a really good way to start would be set the valves. reset the timing. set the fuel pin. then re-diagnose all your problems. see where your at. whenever I buy a vehicle I set everything I can to get a baseline. never mind anything a previous owner says. could be right, wrong, or lies. you'll never know.

Well I helped Pete set the valves on his truck and that went well but I'm still concerned about the crankshaft gear having slipped out of the alignment pin/keyway and putting the engine slightly out of time. When we ran it, it seemed to miss and pop from 1500rpm up and being the worst around 2K rpm. Hopefully Pete can post up the pics of what I'm talking about to give you 12v gurus a better idea.

Also thanks again to Pete and his wife for the hospitality! The dinner was awesome!

That could be a timing or injector issue. Luke's (153624) 12v was like that when he first put it in his chevy. I take it you pulled the front cover then to see the the gear on the crank?

Was the cam pulled recently? It can't be slipped to far, or you'll have valve/piston interfence issues. If the cam is off the mark, I would check the valves to see if you still have a good cylinder. It would take a big impact hit, to break the keyway on the camgear.

i would say alot of the problems have to do with timing ... cruise not work is mostly pcm there bad for it . battery draw could be pcm as well . for fuel leak has the fuel pin bin cut ? if so whats it look like ? and how high are the egt's ?engine hard to start ? whats the truck have for a lift pump ? was the truck runner good then just started runner like hell ?
