I need to borrow some measuring tools?

I want to tear down a 5.9L CTD this up coming weekend. I want to do some measuring of the crank and the cylinders. I'm looking for inside and outside micrometers? I need a few different sizes. Mainly I want to tell the machine shop how much tapper in the cylinders and measure the crank up. I need the tools by mid week to weekend time frame. I have to get an engine build done.

I could set you up with micrometers but I'm stuck in this hell hole refinery in Nfld. For measuring bores nothing beats a real bore gauge. It's hard to measure taper, out of round with inside mic's accurately.

I want to make sure that the cylinders are bored/hored to my specs. I'm getting the engine bored over, I just want to make sure that the machine shop does this correctly. I think that I might look into getting all the tools to measure this stuff up. I have to order the pistons, measure them, prior to boring the cylinder. I want a decent amount of cylinder to piston clearance, as this motor will get hot few times.

Would you guys recommend pistons teflon skirting or just go coat piston? This motor will be abused often and see some big egt's

I bought a good set of snap gauges years ago and like a fool loaned them out. Now 8 years later, not ever coming back.. but with those and a good set of outside mic's would be the most accurate, but a clean set of Vernier calipers might be of good enough tolerance.

Should be able to get your hands on a set of inside mics. You might not like them though, especially on a 4" ID. Need skinny fingers.

Awe man, I just got back from Edmonton. Anybody locally have any measuring tools? Anybody get a decent price break on new snap-on tools?

mike just ask one of the Abdiesel guys in edmonton someone im sure could hook you up with that. it really is exactly what you need. for taper and out of round. I kind of want to buy it now. I could use it on my big block too.

Hey Luke can you fix the piston oil squirter on a CTD? I have one that broken off and is missing. I have a thread going with pictures. Also have you ever looked at the way that the bearing sits, kinda blocking the oil squirt oil flow.

So how much of the piston skirt do you really need? Been looking at those mono-therms, there isn't a lot of piston skirt there and there is no teflon protection.

So I wonder how much of the stock piston skirt you can be adjusted.

On the coating I would make sure there is a coating on the top of the piston, as too much heat will make a stock piston start to flake alluminum off, usually one side will start flakeing then burn through to the top ring. I take it this isn't going to be a daily driver? And I would recomend total seal rings, if your going to machine the hole bigger than normal, they should help seal things up better and reduce blow by, not sure if they would total get rid of blowby but they do on stock bored holes.
