HELP - what did i wreck???
my mods are as follows:
MITUSA lift pump
SMARTY
TS-MVP
TST-PM3
RV275's (Soon to be MACH 2's)
CAI
4" TBE
Built 47RE
Tunnel Ram Plate (soon to be installed) - this is supposed to help spool-up a bit. i want to hold-off installing this until i get the new turbo so i can see what it really does.
HTH you guys in determining the right turbo. i am turbo illiterate, but am learning quickly right now as i am in a bit of a pinch. i also plan on running twins one day so picking a turbo as a single now but with plans to use it in twins would work well for me . . .
a bit pricey but what about a Silver 62 from II???

one of the things that sounds good about the S62 is that it is a direct drop in replacement . . .

Don't waste your time with II, or more appropriately, don't waste your money with them. Thats not to say that their products are shoddy, but $1800 for a 62mm is rediculous. I would stay with the 71mm turbine myself, will cool good but is still responsive. I'd talk to Engineered Diesel, their prices are very good from what I hear. Talk to them and they can give you a good reccomendation for what you have. I'm guessing they would suggest a 62/68.
Just about any turbo is a drop in replacement for our turbos with an HX40 downpipe. Don't let that line on II's be the selling point.
good call on ED - i was planning on chatting with them tomorrow as they seem to have a pretty good rep with a lot of happy customers.
i thought about the drop in line after i wrote it and thought probably any upgraded turbo will need a ne DP.
why don't you like II??

Overpriced. When I bought my turbo 3 years ago, it was still fairly new on the market (the SPS) and it was $1400. They are selling the same turbo for $1800 or more, when other vendors are selling them for much much less. They have name brand recognition and are charging more because of it. Similar to Banks, NADP, etc.
good to know, i wondered that because the price did seem a bit high.
tate - you think bigd's special is too big for what i have? what size would you recommend for my current mods (and possibly to use in twins one day)?

The 64 would be larger than you need. You might like it enough to want to stay with a single (I know Mike is preparing to say something right now). You don't need tons of fuel to get them to drive nice, you need fuel to get the high pressures. Turbos will spool the same on a stock truck as one with big box and big injectors (if timing isn't affected). In top gear and WOT, I will have 15 psi at 1500 rpm, and be around 45 about 1700-1800. My 62 would hit around the same point, but didn't have boost at the lower rpm like this one does. Keep in mind, this is on a 12v, which doesn't flow as well as a 24v. Maybe talk to BigD and see if you can go for a ride in his truck to get a feel for the turbo.
Tate is right I can spool the turbo the same if my chip is on kill or turned off or if I got my Mach 4.5's in or am running my BD130's. I usually see 10psi around 16-1700 and then its straight to 45psi. With the auto and bigger tires I think you would find it a little to laggy.
Hey Jay, bad luck man.
On the plus side, 2 months from now things will be a lot more fun,... new built tranny, even bigger sticks, big turbo to push em, twins if Mike has anything to do with it, all good once you live through the pain....

no twins this year that's for sure. i would like a turbo matched to my mach 2's/and ready for twins in the future . . .
mike -
what are the specs on the S362? i think the S364 might be a bit big . . .
would the S362 be good for twins later?
is that a garret turbo?how would it compare to a Super B?
i am willing to sacrifice some top-end power for some good spool up to make a nice combo in twins later - then i can go for big power whenever that day comes

I wouldnt be scared to go to a little bit bigger charger, a 64 is not all that big of a charger. Especially if the compressor is efficient. I used a silverbullet as a towing charger, worked good. A 64 over a 475 is a very nice combination for street, tow and light race.
i've been doing some thinking and have changed my mind about buying a charger now for current and for future twins use. instead - i will get what is good now, and then sell it and put $$$ towards twins/compounds using turbos specifically built for the setup. i just don't know how many years away twins are - so i'll go with what is good for now and be happy 'today'.
talked to chris at ED and he agrees with that method, although (in the long run) will cost a bit more - and he admits to that as well.
he recommended me to run a 62/68/14 (exactly what tate guessed) for my needs right now. he said it would be great for what i need now, and gives me a little room for bigger sticks before i jump into twins if i wanted to go that route. BTW - he also said it would work in a compound setup - wouldn't be the greatest, but could get the job done.
i could add blankets to it at anytime for a couple hundred dollars and apparently it brings spool-up down 100-150 rpms.
the price is decent at 1650 for the turbo - not cheap but certainly not outrageous. what do you guys think? is this the way to go? or are there other options you think i should consider?

i've been on the phone with Chris at ED and am kinda' leaning (not sold) towards him building me a 62/68/14 gated turbo. since i have the tight converter he really recommended the 62 over a 64.
he said despite being a 62/68/14 it can still and will be tailored to my truck and needs. he builds them per truck as opposed to sit on a shelf with a part number.
it is a bit more expensive than the options you gave mike - what do you think?
BTW - i think a super B is a 57mm, and i think a super b special is a 64 . . .
