Crankshaft Balancing?

I have two cranks I'm going to get balanced up next week. I weighed up six rods from a VP engine. I was supprised that I found 6-9 grams difference between all the rods. On a rod that typically weighs around 2100 grams, I'm sure that its within factory tolerances.

The pistons, rings, pins and bolts weight exactly the same across the board. The test is that I to load up a crank with as found weights and measure how much residual unbalance is in a factory set-up. Then I'll have everything adjusted to perfect balance. I'm going to try a few different harmonic balancers and flex plates, just to see how that effects the rotating mass.

I rented a balance machine for a day. I have a few cranks to spins, so its just as easy to try a few different configurations.

I think its a fun project...

Got my rods back today, wow they look good. I'll post a picture later on. I had a machine shop cut 3/8in off the bottom balance pad. Going to do a quick debeam on them soon.

Still waiting on pistons been bugging harry daily. My new head looks great, thanks to dave's magic. I'll post pics to show the new 12V head.

This engine is running the Mahel 370 marine. Really want to get this done and hear the engine run. Probably run a 180 pump on the engine.

Too bad their isn't a engine dyno for diesels in Calgary as that would be cool..

Luke could you PM me or post, I really like to try some test cell data.

Pretty pumped. The block looked pretty nice piece. I was supprised how well the block cleaned up.
So just throwing out a test plan for the balance machine.
1st crank build-up, VE crank(debeamed/knifed edged), reduced weighed with 12V rods, 370 pistons, ATI harmonic, and billet flex plate.
2nd crank build-up, VP crank, stock VP rods, stock VP pistons, stock harmonic, and stock flex plate. Been curious how well a stock engine is balanced.

Was given the thumbs up for the test today.

did you get the rods shot peened, cryo'd and polished?

Something tells me this won't be a cheap endeavor.

Do you know what they charge for dyno time? and setup time?

I can find out. I'm not sure off the top of my head. Most of the engine dynos are Clayton water dynos. we have an old one out in the yard too. just sitting.

Nothing except for polishing. I don't beleive in the cryo and shotpeening, well maybe. I'm just building up a decent street engine and I think for this engine, the VP rods, debeamed, lighten, lighten crank, haisley rods bolts, and haisley mains will be plently. The biggest power this engine will be around 600-700rwhp and be just running a near stock 180 (with some tweaks) P7100.

I want this engine to be top end build, nearly new replacement.

The rods have been resized, and rebushed. Debeamed, balanced small/big end, lightened slightly.

Luke, if you know of a dyno that I can run a diesel on, I have a few ideas.

Mike, I'm pretty sure that Cummins in Edmonton has the capability to dyno a B-series...think David told me last time I was up there that his went on there before being installed in the truck. Hate to guess what they'd charge you to do it though....

Thast what I'm saying, we - Waterous has one in the shop in Calgary and an old one in the yard. Theres a tranny dyno, a Chassis dyno and the engine dyno here.

Superior Power Systems has a smaller version of the Clayton engine dyno too.

Costs I actually have no idea. I'll be into work later today after some sleep. and hopefully remember to ask.

Thanks guys, with the dyno stuff. Still trying to put together a test plan. Would be nice to do some basic data collection and engine development.

Worst case, is we put a few engines into trucks and run them on the chassis dyno.
