Biodiesel blending in our pumpfuel now?!?!?

so my truck exhaust starts smelling like BIO 2 weeks ago. I think to myself I have not added anything but pump diesel to my truck. weird, still smells like BIO. so this Monday I see a tiny sticker on the pumps at the 130th Ave Coop where I generally get fuel, says fuel may contain Biodiesel blend.

So whats the story here? standard across the board? Who knows what?

Government mandate. Bio blend for diesel and ethanol for gas.

I'd be curious to know what % of BIO.

I don't know, but when I smelled it in the exhaust it was immediate and noticable after filling up there last week.

Ya I'm curious too, how much, wheres it from, who makes it...... etc.

So what is the impact on a CR from the new bio laws?

That is, what changes are needed or advised?

What are the ill effects?

Asking to find out what fixes are needed before problems creep in.

I believe the the new engines are fine with up to 5% bio mix. Worst case i can see is a plugged fuel filter from the cleaning effect of the bio and maybe a little less clatter due to the extra lube.

Sundre Superpass has been pumping the new stuff for about a month now.

I changed out my filter today and was a little surprised at the gunk that was in it over the normal look. More so just blacker and stunk like bio.

I'm not complaining about the cleaning effect of the bio and am more than happy with the extra lubrication from it for the old VP.

Hasn't hurt my mileage one bit either!

Jeff

OK, so what exactly does biodiesel exhaust smell like? Can you do scratch and sniff on this forum?

I dunno, some will say smells like frenchfries. I can't describe it, because theres nothing else that smells like it that I've come across. but once you know it, you'll know it.

Dodge is good till 15%year round,
Ford is good to 5% year round for the most part,
Chevy is good to 5% year round.

The manufacturers say only good to 5% for private use.
Goverment fleets are good to 15%.

Definitely doesn't smell like french fries. But it does smell good. You always know when Dave is pulling into the area because you get the bio smell right away.

From the refinery newsletter where I work: "This standard will now require an average of 2% renewable diesel (Biodiesel) in diesel fuel and 5% renewable alcohol (Ethanol) in gasoline sold in Alberta."

For 6-7 months in the summer, it will be blended at 5% to meet the average for the year. I believe that soon it will be a 5% biodiesel requirement instead of 2% though.
