400,000 km update.

I bought my truck new in Sept 2004. Been using it for operating ever since. I will try to give as much info on it as best I can remember! Truck spends alot of time in mud and gravel on really rough roads. All in all I still like this truck alot and have the urge every now and then for a new truck, but just the cost of a new truck that is going to get beat in the oilpatch never seems to get me 2 buy a new one. They all need repairs and most stuff is not covered under warranty anyways. Even though the repair list is huge I still think I got a good one.

- 1 trac bar
- 4 wheel bearings. 2 each side.
- 3 front axle u-joints
- 2 sets of front brake pads.
- 7 sets of rear brake pads
- 2 sets of rear calipers and rotors.
- 1 nv5600 transmission. Covered under 115,000 km warranty
- 5 front driveshafts. Started rebuilding my own!
- 1 rear u-joint
- 1 steady bearing
- 1 lift pump replaced with in tank one on warranty.
- 5 sets of upper and lower ball joints.
- 2 sets of control arms.
- 1 hvac door repair.
- 1 coolant flush.
- 40 oil changes using only fleetgaurd LF3894
- Used probably at least 10 different oils, varying viscosity's. 0-30, 0-40, 5-40, 15-40....
- 6 fuel filter changes.
- sucked airfilter up into stock airbox 3x! LOL
- original injectors
- motor untouched. Never even lashed the valves.
- Oilpan heater and ctek battery maintainer.
- 3 sets of shocks
- Original altnator, water pump.
- re-arced rear leaf springs 2x
- Carli starter kit.
- 1 fan belt and tensioner pully.
- 3 steering stabilizer shocks.
- who knows how many sets of tires.......
- backup lights have not worked for about 3 years..... new switch in center console for 3 years!
- amsoil front to back except engine.
- original transfer case and front and rear diffs.
- 4 front axle seals
- no works ever on rear diff.
- abs not working for last 4 years.
- drivers side passenger auto door lock and speaker do not work.
- original clutch. Replaced release bearing 285,000 kms ago when trans was replaced.
- original slave cylinder.
- 1 set of emergency brake cables. Need to be done again.
- Truck weighs at least 9500 lbs at all times.
- 8594 hrs on engine
- fuel mileage meticulously recorded. Average 15.98 L/100 kms.
- 14.72 us mpg
- 17.7 imp mpg
- Best tank in last 4 months 13.6 L/100 kms.
- 17.29 us mpg
- 20.81 imp mpg
- Lots of scratches dents and dings....
- engine warm up consists of starting engine and slowly backing out of driveway unless -20 or colder. (remember oilpan heater and block heater)
- Stock turbo. Cooled down maybe 2x in its life when towing TT.
- Smarty Jr programmer.
- No gauges. Gave up on them 250,000 kms ago when my edge J/A was being a piece of crap!
- Dynoed 399 or 398 with stock exhaust and intake (even paper air filter) with smarty Jr!
- Now have no cat and magnaflow muffler. 4 inch! LOL
- Truck not washed in pics. That is real life! It is always dirty when I am at work.....
- Half a million Km's here I come baby!
- About my only complaint is the drivers seat! I am 235 lbs and the cushion is trashed... 750 bucks for a new one @ dealer. To cheap to cure my cronic backpain!
- Questions? Comments?

That's interesting to see your service history, and your record keeping seems to be better than most. I write all my repairs into a logbook and keep all my receipts but I never record any fuel purchases.

It's interesting to note how much service your rear brakes have needed compared to the front. I too have seen the same frequency of problems with rear discs on all makes of truck, compared to rear drum brakes. The front tires kick up streams of gravel, slush and dust, and it is all absorbed by the rear brakes, destroying the rubber slide bushings and dust seals, ultimately causing the calipers to seize and eat the pads and rotors. Drum brakes were sure trouble-free in comparison, especially on the bad roads you are always on.

Good to see your injectors have held up. Do you always fuel up at gas stations, or do you fill up from a bulk tank?

Thanks for the info.

PS) I have seen threads on here about people opening up the seat and adding their own foam to the cushion. The results sound good, and it's better than spending $750.

Yeah, the mud sure takes its toll on the rear brakes. I have had the caliper guards since new, but the mud always gets so packed in there..... In fact, I have resorted now to just replacing the inside pad on the rear brakes when my calipers stick. Get 2x the life out of my pads this way. As for fuel, I filled up @ our local UFA for about 3 years and have been filling up @ Co-op for the last 3 years. Very high volume cardlock locations and have never had a problem with fuel. 3 things I would have done differently if I had known I was going to keep the truck as long as I have.

1) Exhaust Brake.
2) Dyna trac front hubs.
3) Carli upper and lower ball joints. I would tested them suckers for their lifetime warranty!

Those are pretty swanky wheels for operating John...

Nice list - I wish I was that thorough. I would imagine that truck has seen a fair bit of idleing??

Is your 12V back up and running?

I really don't idle my truck that much. In fact I am surprised my starter has not calved out on me. My smarty Jr tells me I have 13,000 plus key cycles! I shut my truck off at least 15-20 times per day. Engine running when not in motion is 0 mpg! LOL As for the 12v....well it is not running yet. Million other things going on in my life. I consider myself Al Bundy. Married with children. Need I say more!

And the rims are controversial, either people tell me they hate them and they are gay, or some people just love them. I like em! Nuff said.

That's pretty good considering the kicking they take in the 'patch. I should dig through my service records one day just to compare-I know your fuel mileage is higher than mine though. I'm at 445K now-the last 15 or so haven't involved much operating. Barring something cataclysmic, the old girl will just be a spare truck now.

Excellent results for what the truck is used for.

A friend of mine over here on the flats has two high mile trucks...RV haulers.
The shocker is that the Ford 6.0 has never had ANY major work done and its closing in on 900,000 KMS! Its ran with an Edge Juice since one wk after he bought it.

His 06 Ram 3500 4x2 is over 800K but its also on its 4th engine...however, still on the original brakes. His first engine was replaced under warranty...bad injectors. 2nd and third out of his own pocket and I did not know him then.
He recently dropped an 07 engine with 67,000 KMS into it and it runs smoother then the others.
1-1.5" memory foam is what to use on the seat. I have 2" in there and its just a bit too much even after compressing and heat blasting it for 60,000 miles.

Kevin, I will give you a shout if there is anything I need. I did the seat cushion repair on my 98. Might tackle it on this truck. Now that I am thinking of it, I think I have some left over from 7 or 8 years ago when I did my 98.

I'm closing on the 300000km mark myself as of today, my parts list is nothing like your John. Congrats on owning such a nice ride buddy. My ride is hiway driven, so I don't go thru as many parts. I just put on approx 1100 km on my truck today. I drove from Estevan to Madison Wiscosion, today. The day before 1000km, the truck ran non stop from Edmonton to Estevan. As for fuel mileage I'm guessing around 18-20mpg at around 130kph. I think we findly found some nice weather today. Everything is pretty green and even saw a few flowers. I can't wait to see how the 98 2500 ride works out for ya.

Thats my favourite part. I'm not the only one with parts kicking around that don't get used.

Impressive record keeping. Wish either of my trucks had that kind of info. Only things I know for sure done to them are the things I've done to them.

My Update at 490,000kms

I left out oil changes/tires and other non pertainant stuff, and the first yr did not write everything down, I keep a small note pad in the dash and note repairs and stuff, very handy when trying to remember what and when you changed the parts last.

spent 34,000$ in fuel in the past 3yrs. have just put 200,000kms on it since I bought the truck, hour meter shows I should have went over 600,000kms if you use 2000 hrs (run time in one yr) multiplied by 100km per hour.

No matter what tire I've run they usually only last 8-10months (approx 40-50,000kms)
