24 Valve rebiuld on a shoestring budget. no laughing
I stumbled across a 24 valve that has had huge issues with pumps ..
Long and short the back 2 pistons melted slightly. which in turn caused damage to the head .
I am getting the motor for next to nothing (beer money)
I plan on turning it into a p-pumped 24V Yes Mike Twins
Anyways there are a fair number of dings in the head My question . Is it worth messing around with the head or scraping it ?
Thank you

How cheap you going? Are you going to buy pistons?
Thank you on the twins part..
...
You probably could do it very cheap, but don't cut corners. You are going to rering and install bearings? How about seals? I would bug Harry for a rebuild kit. If the cylinders look good, just do a simple ball hone to clean up the cylinder. I would rather build a 12v, its cheaper and the good parts are very easy to find. Usually they come complete with injector lines/injection pump.

Well I will need pistons for sure, hopefully the Block and cylinder walls are good
The head has quite a few dings in it Plus i will need to get new tips and or new p-pump injectors plus the p-pump I will post some pictures of the head later on
Plus I may was well do the ARP or A-1 studd while I am at it
I am Patient, I know cheap and building a higher power Cummins are not in the same arena
I am kinda screwed now for getting a smoken deal in machining. my guy is shutting down and moving to BC.

ive said it tons of times before, alberta engine in calgary has rediculously good prices. Cummins gaskets. cant remember the name of the piston and bearing manufacturer but i've used them in a few engines and never had a problem. full rebuild kit with pistons for less then pistons from cummins

Good to know that Thank you

Roxxx, take some pictures and do lots of measuring. Maybe someone has 24v stock pistons and you can get them cheap. You'll need a full major rebuild kit. How does the crank look? Can be done...
I have a spare head that was good when I yanked the motor. Will need a cleanup etc, but AFAIK valve job etc. are OK. PM me and we'll talk about it. I have a CR head to install on my build. Guess I should give this Alberta Engine place a call too as well as Peak to get some pricing. My pistons look to be OK, and there's no ring ridge on the cyl walls-so I'm hoping I can go with rings/bearings/gaskets/oil pump + a cam and lifters while it's apart.

If nobody want that 24V head, I'll take it off you Jason. Been looking for a head for my spare 24V short block back-up motor. I was planning on putting on a 6.7L head, but if the price is right..
As for cheapy rebuilds it cheaper just to go find a good running low mileage 24v motor. Stuff just keeps on adding up.
I'm building a motor, its not a stock rebuild, but its not cheap either. Getting the rods and crank knifed/lightened/prepped for cryo/shotpeen.

Thing about finding a low mileage short block is that you really don't know the PO's maintenance habits. The engine that's in my truck now was supposed to have under 160K on it-betting I'll find a plugged cooling nozzle in it if/when I dissect it after it comes out. At least if you do it yourself, you have nobody but yourself to blame if things go sideways, right?

I usually pull the head and the oil pan off and check a few things, before installing the engine. You can see what you need to see by doing that.
If you want to sell that 24v head I'm interested. Gone thru three heads to find one that wasn't cracked.

I am getting this for 200 bucks. they need the front and back off of the motor which dosent bother me. I have the back mounting for the nv4500 already and i want a p-pump front
Alberta Engine wants just over $1500 for the kit-that includes pistons, rings, bearings and gaskets. No standard pistons in stock, just oversized, and only 5 standards in stock in Canada. Not sure how that compares to Peak-I have been spending the morning swapping tires on my truck. 35s suck even with a tire machine....
I'd pay up to $1500 for a decent shortblock alright-but after my last experience I would have to see it running, and/or get to inspect it thoroughly before I'd part with the cash. I paid $2500 for this one-it ran good but something obviously went south on it-I'll have to go and look but thinking around 20K on it in my possession which is not great service to say the least.
I'll let you know on the head Mike. If roxxx wants it, he's got first dibs. I need to look at it closely before I sell it to make sure it's OK as well. Want to buy a good '05 CR shortblock?
I have it on Kijiji right now-so far 1 tire kicker and 1 guy wanting to trade me a '72 Nova for it.

http://www.iesc-diesel.com/Rebuild_K...Kit_early.html
i bought my kit from them when they had a special going on.. $700 shipped with pistons and all.. seemed a little cheap but the parts showed up and they seem to be really good quality... i bought the kit cause i know my engine is going to need a rebuild in the short near future.. just couldnt justifying the 1000+ i found elsewere for kits...
