Espar or Webasto Heaters

Anyone have any experience with either of these heating systems in a new 4th gen truck. My trucks runs 24/7 in the winter and needless to say the DPF doesn't like that to much.
Wanted to put one of these in to warm the cab and block. Dealer told that for the webasto I would need to put the engine heater in along with a cab air heater for a total of $3700 which is a huge jump over the $1500 you could do before on the 3rd gen rams.

Looking to see what other people have done to keep themselves warm all day, and having the motor shut off.

I had one on my 03 and it was great. You just use one unit and there are tied into the heater fan. It turns the heater fan on and warms the cab. Drains the batteries a bit faster though.
I have been told by espar and dodge not to install it on the new dodge (2010 and newer). They have a new computer and it can not handle an engine preheater. It will make it through a code. It will be interesting to see what others have to say.

Ya that's what I understood. Just wish there was an alternative out there to either idling the truck all the time in high idle. Or spending the 3700 to have the engine and cab heater installed.

I can't see a computer throwing a code because the engine is warm and not running, perhaps it's the 12volts being fed to the heater fan and powering only some of the circuits. This could easily be overcome with a relay, cut the main feed and power just the fan. My son desperately needs a webasto or Espar on his 2011 so I have to figure it out.

I have an Espar in my 12, everything is good to go and code free...

I also have a Webasto with a 7 day timer sitting in my garage...it was going to go in my 06 but I sold the 06 last night...now I have no use for it

B-Man,

Did they get the interface working now so that the heater controls come on?

Last year when I looked into it, it would have only been an expensive engine heater...Where did you get the Espar? Was it difficult to install?

I bought the Espar from Polar mobility in Edmonton and they did the install with the cab fans...all for about $2800 tax in.

Thanks, I'll check them out next week and see exactly what they are doing on the install. I am leaning toward the Espar as they seem simpler in design.

Are you working in our "Skid Mark" town Dhrider? I hope you are not one of those. I met a fella like that once - lives down south - can't make any good money anywhere so he comes up here to our town to make the big bucks - drives like an a-hole, treats everyone like they owe him something, complains about everything and talks bad about a place that has done nothing but help him keep a roof over his families heads and food on the table - Not to mention the shiny new truck and all the toys. What does Fort McMurray get out of it - Sweet F&^K all. Just another person so quick to talk trash about the place all while enjoying the benefits. Maybe he is just upset that he has to leave his family for long periods just to make a buck - i have no idea...but shouldn't give him the right to talk bad about a place that he doesn't even know. I really hope you are not like him.
/end rant

I too will be checking those heaters out next time I head south to Edmonton - hope they work without codes in the 4th gens now! Thanks for the info B-Man

I do work up there sometimes. And the reasons you just stated is pretty much why i hate going up there. I can't stand the attitude people have. Everyone is in a rush, everything is restarted exspensive, and everyone acts like you owe them everything. I work all over bc,ab, and sask and fort Mac is my least fav next to red earth :-p only because red earth is really just gross.

Dropped by the Espar dealer today, for the 2011 the kit to install the heater on the inside frame rail behind the trans is not available and they are installing on the outside frame rail just behind the drivers front wheel. They did say that for extreme conditions they could put one on the inside behind the trans. They also said that for 2011 the heater fan needs relays to switch the + and - wires going to the fan, they did say 2 relays to do this but I think it could be done with one. The control module must also monitor the - signal. They also need another (third) relay to turn off the first two relays when you start the truck with the heater running. They did say that default was floor and cold and that confirms what my son had the other day, so not sure how they get def and heat unless you set it before hand to def and heat and the control module somehow maintains it there while shut down? The module I think has power all the time so maybe. $2295 + $300 for the relays +tax. Didn't ask about just the parts.
