Cold air intake

Hello,

I have just upgraded from my 1998 Chevy 6.5 diesel to a loaded out 2011 Cummins 6.7. I have some factory warranty left so I don't want to go all out on the aftermarket goodies yet. I'm looking to change the intake box now and I'm wondering which one will give me the best fuel mileage. Its currently getting 16-17 mpg empty.

Thanks!

As far as I know you're not going to gain any mileage with a cold air kit

Your factory box filters better than the aftermarket unit's...no gain to be had until you reach 500 hp if you mod your truck. Save your money for something that will actually help you.

Thanks for the input. My wife and I are living in our 5th wheel as we travel all over the US and Canada for the next two years. We are scheduled to be in each state and district for two weeks at a time. I am looking to try for the best fuel mileage possible. The truck has about 25-30,000 miles left on the warranty. Once that is up I want to do the full deletes and put the best computer for mileage. I plan to do all my research on the forum sites.

Thanks again.

The best you can do at this point given your circumstances and retain warranty is to disconnect the EGR. You will get a CEL and you won't be able to use remote start If you have it (because of the CEL) but you will get slightly better MPG. Another benefit is that your truck won't be eating it's own byproduct at idle. I had a CAI on my truck and I got worse mileage. Went back to stock and my mileage went up. Good luck and be safe in your travels.

So we can disconnect the EGR without a tuner? No limp mode issues just a CEL?

On 2010's and some 2011's you can do it without a limp mode, but I believe you do get a CEL since it does throw a code

That is correct just disconnect the plug hiding behind the egr valve on the drivers side. It is hard to disconnect because of where it is located and unlocking the tab on the connector is hard, but it is doable.

I drove that way for nearly 12K miles before I deleted with zero issues other than the CEL and no remote start. I never had a problem with the dpf and regens.

Did that clean up your oil and stop the "Making oil" issue?

I don't think it would since the making oil part is because of post injection used to heat the dpf

The EGR just recycles exhaust when idle. When driving it doesn't do anything.

Unplugging the EGR will at some point you'll have a plugged up DPF. Of course haulin a trailer will help to burn off all the carbon build-up. Probably the best solution for better fuel mileage is to delete the truck with H&S or the smarty.

I never had an issue with warranty, but I never needed warranty with 2010. Most of the stuff that broke, was caused from myself.
